Maintaining a high quality lawn will require both time and effort. Knowing a few simple tricks on proper mowing will not only prevent you from causing any damage to your lawn but it will also help in making your lawn healthy and beautiful.
1. Never mow a wet lawn. This is because wet grass clippings will easily form clumps and these clumps can smother the grass below. This leads into the forming of brown spots or dead spots on your lawn. After a rain storm, it is suggested to wait at least a day or two before mowing the lawn. It is also suggested to avoid mowing right after watering the lawn.
2. Never cut more than a third of the grass' height. This is because cutting more than a third of the height of the grass will put stress on the turf. A well maintained lawn will have between 2 to 3 inches of grass which means they will need to be mowed once they reach 4 to 4-1/2 inches in height. The frequency of mowing the lawn will depend on the climate.
3. Always keep your lawn mower blades sharp. This is very important because a dull blade will only tear the grass instead of cutting it and this can lead into the browning of the tips of the grass blades. Having a sharp blade will provide a more even and effortless cut. The sharpening of the blades of a lawn mower is a part of mower maintenance. This can be done with a grinder or you can have a professional do it for you.
4. Never mow in the same direction each and every time. A lot of people have developed this habit simply because they find it more efficient doing it this way. However, doing it in the same direction each time may cause the grass to develop 'grain' similar to those found on wood because the grass that are growing off the sides do not get trimmed as evenly unlike those growing upwards. The best way to avoid this is to mow at a right angle on the direction the grass was last trimmed.
5. Never bag your grass clippings. This is because leaving the clippings behind is an easy way of returning the nutrients back to the soil thereby reducing the need for fertilizers. However, it is important to mow the grass frequently and avoid them from getting too tall so that the grass clippings will not be easily noticeable.
These five easy tips will not add nor reduce the work needed for your lawn chores and they will not make your lawn as lawn as beautiful as a golf course. They will however ensure that your lawn is healthy, green, and lush with no additional maintenance on your part.
