About Miller Plasma Cutters

Miller plasma cutters are one of the best solutions for metal cutting, piercing and gouging. They are relatively inexpensive and very high quality. Miller plasma cutters can cut through any conductor of electricity, not just metal. They make less of a mess than oxy fuel cutters and they are able to pierce, bevel, gouge, stack cut and shape cut any type and size of metal.

Miller plasma cutters have become so popular over the years because they are very user friendly, clean and can be used for so many metal work applications. I am sure you know how tedious it is to handle band saws or cutting shears. Not only that, but shears are expensive (considering they can only do one thing) and they may not make clean cuts.

Before you buy a Miller cutter you have to consider what type and thickness of metal you will be cutting most of the time. Depending on the type and thickness of metal you will choose the appropriate output power, nozzle size and type of air or gas needed for the cutter.

All plasma cutters are rated on three different cutting types.

Rated Cut - this cut makes an incision at 10 inches per minute
Quality Cut - this test cuts thicker metals at a rate slower than 10 inches per minute
Sever Cut - this test demonstrates the thickest metal that a certain model of plasma cutter is able to cut (sever cuts often need to be cleaned up afterwards)

When you are shopping for cutters you will read a lot about these three different types of cuts. It is a good idea to know what type of cutting you plan on doing and purchase a cutter model that is suitable.

After you buy a cutter, the setup is really easy. All you have to do is connect the Miller plasma cutter to an air compressor, plug them both in and turn them both on. When something is so easy to use it is tempting to neglect proper safety guidelines, but you will not use that as excuse will you? There are risks involved with using cutters, the most severe are loss of life and limb. Make sure that you wear proper safety gear and use your common sense whenever operating dangerous equipment.

Choosing the Right Riding Mower

For most homeowners in the United States, the classic rotary lawn mower is more than enough for them to get their yard looking picture perfect. However, there are some homeowners who have yards that, simply put, are far too big for them to cut with the conventional rotary motor. Back in the day, before the advent of the mechanical lawn mower, homeowners who had lots of land on their property turned to nature's creatures to keep their grass nice and tidy. By letting their livestock graze on their land, property owners would keep their animals well fed while keeping their lawns looking presentable, with only minimal effort required to clean up any messes left by the animals. However, in this new day and age, there is a far easier and much cleaner option to livestock: the riding mower.

The riding lawn mower is an especially popular device with farmers and owners of large chunks of land that require mowing. The most popular of these riding mowers, as well as one of the oldest models of riding lawn mowers is the lawn tractor. Taking several design cues from its unofficial older brother, the classic farm tractor, this particular mower has survived for nearly fifty years.

The other overtly popular model of riding mower is what is known as the "z-turn" type. Like the riding mower, the Z-Type has the blades between the front and rear wheels, and has a seat. That's really about it as far as similarities go. Once you can get used to the driving style of the dual levers to control your turning, people who use the Z-Type of lawn mower swear by it for its ability to make sharp turns and cut around trees and bushes.

You may also want to take note that most riding lawn mowers are also able to be outfitted with snowplows, snowblowers, vacuums, and a bevy of other lawn care items.

Safety Woodshop Ideas

• Do not take drugs or alcohol before, during and after working. This will avoid any problems brought about by these elements on your wood work project.

• Disconnect all switches when done working. Do not leave machines plugged in or turned on when you are already done with your work.

• Watch out for blades, nails, screws ad other metals. These can easily injure you if you accidentally hit or run into.

• Clean all clutter after working to make sure that no one will get injured or run into an accident with your tools.

USLMRA Lawn Mower Racing Divisions and Some of the Basic Requirements

Just like any association, the United States Lawn Mower Racing Association also has its own divisions that separate the big guys from the rookies. The first step you need to take prior to competing on a racing mower is to choose your division.

One unique division that the USLMRA offers is the JP class for kids. If you're an enthusiast, you can make it a family event by teaching your kids, as well as your spouse, how to drive a racing mower. You'll be happy with the outcome. My kids even enjoy mowing the lawn now. They imagine that they're lawn mower racing.

Divisions:

JP Class - This division is for 10 - 15 year old kids that have the need for speed. Here are things that you can do to a mower under this class.

Full sized chassis with a minimum ground clearance of 4".
Stock body. Sorry kids, no mid engines allowed.
Governed engine (3650 RPM) with 15HP max.
Max gear ratio of 8:1
Open exhaust allowed.
Minimum of 5" for the front wheels and 8" for the rear.
Max of 16" for the rear tires.
Front spindles minimum 5/8" in diameter.

Stock Class - I think you know what I mean when I say "stock". Yup, that's it, just stick a number on your mower, add some fun stickers and start lawn mower racing. Of course, to make it a racing mower you have to remove the blades of course.

IMOW Class (International Mowers of Weeds) - Not that kind of weed. This is a unique class with a few unique rules:

39" wheelbase with a max width of 38"
Full sized chassis with a minimum ground clearance of 4" and deck clearance of
2 ½ ".
Governed engine at 3650RPM with 15HP max.

20HP max, OHV single cylinder, V-twin engines. (Of course, you'd want to max out these engine stats)
42" wheelbase, unaltered.
No mid-engine frames.
6" minimum for the front wheels and 8" minimum for the rear.

F/X - This is the ultimate division. Everybody wants to race in the F/X class but only a few are skilled enough to qualify.

12 - 14HP single cylinder engine up to 465cc (pure power)
Exhaust can be open.
A spherical rod end for the steering is a must.
Snow Hogs allowed on the front.
Clutch and torque converter allowed.
15" max for the frame width and 48" for the length.
10" max for the wheel diameter of your racing mower
Those are the USLMRA lawn mower racing divisions you can choose from. You have lots of choices and lots of room to grow as a racer. Don't rush yourself and sign up under the F/X class if you don't have the skills yet. You'll get there, sooner than you might think.

Rotary Laundry Line - Top 10 Tips When Buying Rotary Styled Laundry Lines

Because it is so popular there are lots of rotary laundry lines and clotheslines to choose from. Here is a guide to choosing the best one for you.

1 What size do you need? Rotary styled laundry lines come in a variety of sizes for different sized households. If you have a very big family you can find rotary laundry lines with as much as 60 metres of line space. This rotary laundry line would be far too big for a singe person so do make sure you get the right size for your needs.

2 What colour would you like? Like most things nowadays laundry lines come personalized. If standard greens or creams don't suit you some companies will colour yours to suit your taste.

3 Quality. A rotary laundry line is supposed to last a long time. It needs to be made from metal and the paint needs to be able to withstand the weather. It's very important you check these things. A decent product will offer a guarantee.

4 The lines should be spaced well apart to give the clothes room to wave in the breeze. Clothes hung too close together take too long to dry.

5 Will you need to remove your rotary clothesline or laundry line? Some people never want to take theirs out while others will want to move theirs all the time for games and barbeques. Many rotary lines are designed to be permanent but the modern brands tend to be easily removable for those important occasions. Make sure you choose an easily removable one if you think you will need that.

6 Do you need your new rotary laundry line installed for you? Some companies offer this service to take out all the hassle for you.

Now that is the basics, but what about the special features?

7 Gear hoist. Some rotary laundry products come with a gear hoist to push your washing higher up in the breeze. Do you need this? If you have high fences and a still garden you might like the hoist to help your clothes dry quickly in the breeze.

8 Breeze brakes. While your washing needs the breeze you don't want your rotary line spinning excessively in the wind, this is why breeze brakes are good.

9 Sheet separators. Make even king size sheets dry quickly.

10 Coat hooks. Excellent additions to quality rotary laundry lines for drying these bulky items.

The Wood Router

One of the most versatile and heavily used power tools in the home wood shop, would have to be the router. These tools are capable of so many things, you could spend an enormous amount of time learning their full potential. From cutting dado's, to making moldings, to making raised panel doors, these tools, equipped with the proper bit, can accomplish a whole host of wood working tasks.

There are a number of things to consider when buying a router. The first thing to consider would be deciding if you plan on owning more than one of these modern marvels. In most professional wood shops, dedicated routers are common. This simply means cutters, or bits, as they're commonly called are left in the router, and set to perform a certain function. These routers are not used for anything else, as once they are adjusted for a specific task, they are used only for that. It might be to rabbit the back edge of cabinets, to allow the back panel to sit in this recess, or one set up with a commonly used edging bit. The advantage of this is the time saved in changing bits and adjusting it.

Obviously, a home wood shop isn't as likely to own ten or more routers, but having more than one is a very good idea. If you want to have one installed into a router table, it is very convenient to have a dedicated one. Typically, you would want a plunge router for this, and one with sufficient power to handle larger cutter sets, such as raised panel cutters, for making cabinet doors. Trying to use one of these large bits in a hand held router would be quite dangerous.

Knowing router safety is imperative, as these tools, while considered relatively safe, can do a lot of damage. Using the proper feed direction, whether using a hand held router, or a router table, is important. This isn't a big of a safety factor in a hand held router, as it is with a router table, but it is still quite important.

With a router table, feeding a board into a spinning router bit, in the same direction that the bit is turning, is likely to end up with the board being pulled out of your hands, and shot like a missile across your shop. If it were to hit someone, there is a very strong chance it would be fatal.

The feed direction in a hand held router is left to right, and in a router table, is right to left. The feed direction is opposite, since the router is held in the opposite position.

Eye protection is a must, and a mask for the dust is highly recommended. If your router has a vacuum port, it helps considerably to use it. One tool that will fill the air with dust very quickly is the router.

Some routers have a toggle type switch, so it is important to verify it is in the off position, before plugging it in. It is also important to hold a router with both hands when turning it on, as the torque in these tools can cause you to lose control of it, or have it come into contact with your body. Therefore it is best to have the router held flat onto the work surface, with the bit not coming into contact with the board, and then turning it on. Then gently bring it into contact with the work piece.

Getting the best results with a router is dependent upon a few things. First is the sharpness of the bit. Next would be the feed rate. Moving the router too slow will result in burn marks on the board. Moving the router too fast, will not only put unnecessary strain on the motor, bit it will result in a poor cut. It will either be wavy, or will have tear out. The best feed rate will take some experimenting, and it will be different for various woods, and also for different router bits.

The learning curve for using a router is relatively small for the basics uses, but with all the possibilities these tools provide, you can spend a considerable amount of time mastering them.

How to Remove Rust From Stainless Steel

People buy stainless steel kitchen ware and appliances for their durability, eye catching appeal, and ability to resist stains and rust. So it's not surprising that these items are in great demand, highly coveted, and horrendously expensive.

But in time, due to constant wear and tear, the coating starts to wear off and a slight rusting starts to appear on the surface. This unsightly stain diminishes the value of your investment and will undoubtedly create more problems for you in the future.

So how do you protect your investment? How do you remove rust from your stainless steel grill? Or how do you remove the rust from your stainless steel sink? Or how do you remove the rust from items as small as a stainless steel knife? And do you remove tarnish from the stainless steel surface?

For items as small as a pocket knife, all you need to do is to spray an all-purpose lubricant like WD40 on the surface, take a paper towel and wipe it down. This normally removes most of the rust from the stainless steel surface.

But if there's still some rust stains on the surface, you can take some fine sandpaper (320 or 400 grit will do) and lightly sand the affected areas. But don't overdo it or else you'll unintentionally remove the protective coating and expose the bare metal. If you happen to break or etch the surface, you'll be creating more problems for yourself in the future.

Now a kitchen sink is an altogether different ballgame.

To remove rust from a stainless steel kitchen sink, you'll be going "natural". For this task, you'll need some baking soda, lemon juice, and white vinegar. Just estimate the right amount of each ingredient based on the size of your kitchen sink and mix the ingredients up into a paste and spread it over the affected area. Let it sit for a few hours to give time for your homemade rust remover to react, breakdown, and dissolve the rust. Then just wash the paste and stains away and wipe the sink dry.

Using natural ingredients instead of chemicals to remove rust from the stainless steel kitchen sink is highly recommended, so you won't have any problems washing fruits and vegetables in the treated sink. There won't be any toxic chemical residues in the sink to contaminate the food while you're preparing it.

How about stainless steel appliances? How do you remove rust from these highly priced items?

A couple of decades ago, home appliances used to come in one color: refrigerator white. Now it's stainless steel. They may look good on your kitchen but over time the stainless steel coating will eventually need your tender loving care.

You start by dipping a moist, soft bristled toothbrush onto a box of baking soda. Then lightly rub back and forth in the direction of the stainless steel grain. This gentle abrasive action should get into the grain without etching it. Then rinse the baking soda off the toothbrush using a damp paper towel. Then dry the appliance thoroughly. Make sure not to leave even a smidgeon of moisture on the metal surface. Any remaining moisture will only attract more rust so you must be sure to completely and thoroughly dry the steel surface of the appliance you're treating.

If you see or smell some rust on the toothbrush or paper towel, then you should be congratulating yourself. This means that your efforts have borne fruit! By the way, don't be surprised if your kitchen appliance looks better than when you first bought it from the store. You'll simply be amazed by the results! You can take my word for it.

Who Needs Lawn Mower Tractors?

Ride on mower tractors are expensive pieces of equipment. Purchase of one unit could cost you thousands of dollars. Hence, if you are considering buying a lawn tractor, it is first necessary to determine if such an equipment fits your requirements.

Foremost among the factors to consider is the size of your lawn. You will need to choose from various models of lawn mower tractors if your yard is at least half an acre or more. Your yard area has to be wide enough to justify the purchase of a lawn tractor. Otherwise, what you may only need is a rotary push mower if your yard is small or just of average size.

The type of terrain in your yard will also determine what type of lawn tractor would be best for cutting grass. If the grounds of your lawn have hills or slopes, it would be smart to choose from lawn mower tractors with an all-wheel drive design. The trees, shrubs and collateral structures in your lawn, such as fountains or bird baths, would also influence your choice for the appropriate ride on mower. If your lawn have many obstacles that would call for constant quick turns for the lawn tractor, what is needed are models designed with zero turning radius. If the lawn is flat and long with few obstacles, you will have a good choice in conventional ride-on lawn tractors. You can enjoy a fast and speedier mowing in this case.

What you intend to do with the cut grass is also influential in choosing the right lawn tractor. Those lawn mower tractors that are designed with baggers are more expensive, sometimes 25% higher than conventional ride-on mowers. Bagging the cut grass, however, may be important to you for recycling the materials to compost. If composting is not your cup of tea, what you may consider is a lawn tractor wherein an optional mulching kit could be installed. This kit is designed with mulching blades to further cut the grass into small pieces which are allowed to fall to the ground, degrade and turn into mulch.

Another important factor in having the right choice from ride on mowers many of which are marketed online, is the time that you expect to devote in mowing. Some may find lawn mowing an enjoyable routine, but others would want to immediately have the job done. Storage space should likewise be considered particularly if you have limited space in your garden shed or garage.

Finally, it should be decided whether you want to make other use for the lawn tractor in addition to cutting grass. There are many other garden jobs that can be accomplished by lawn mower tractors with versatile functions. For example, some models incorporate a simple rear connection to a small utility trailer, handy for moving garden paraphernalia in a wide yard. In fact, you can choose a lawn tractor with functions useful for all seasons. These advanced lawn mower tractors can be fitted with various devices like rototillers, vacuums, snowblowers and snowplows, a versatility that would be very valuable in large yards or lawns.

Impact Wrench - A Great Tool to Handle

An impact wrench is a socket wrench control power which is used to generate high torque. There is a minimum exertion by the user. This high torque is delivered suddenly to the output torque. The compressed air is certainly the most important power source but the electric as well as the hydraulic power are also very common and used frequently. The cordless electric devices are also very popular in the recent times.

These impact wrenches are most common power source. It is definitely available in almost all the socket wrench size. A rotating mass is being circulated by the motor. Can you feel that what is this meant for? Certainly, this is meant for making hole in the rocks as well as the walls. Now, I think that you must have got the idea about the impact wrench.

Power source
You should know that the most important power source is the compressed air which provides a low cost design. The power to weight ratio is also quite good. Almost on all the cases the simple vain motor is used. As far as the lubrication system is concerned, the most common one is the oiled air. Some of the others are the special oil passages. It is routed to the parts that need it. Some of the other parts that need it are the gear reduction system.

Most of the driving wrenches drive the hammer directly from the motor.

Sizes and Style
You will be quite thrilled to note that the impact wrenches are available in almost all the sizes. Very huge wrenches are also available and micro wrenches are also available.

So these are some of the wrenches which are available in the market. Some of the other wrenches which are available in the market are equally good. There is lot to talk about the mechanism but now the people are not so worried about the mechanism as far as the various gadgets are concerned.

Some of the wrenches are provided with the diamond tip. Let me tell you that the diamond is the hardest substance known. Hence, it can make the hole in almost all the things. The wrenches can also be used as the driller. Let me tell you that the wrenches are certainly a multipurpose gadget. You can use it for different purpose and still you will find it to be really quite great for all the causes which you will have.

Going Green With Push Reel Lawn Mowers

With the national average price of gasoline at over $4 per gallon, it's no wonder people are trying to come up with ways to save money on gas. One of the major trends in the U.S.A. right now is switching from gas lawn mowers to good old fashioned push reel lawn mowers. Manual mowers offer plenty of advantages over gas mowers, especially in regards to their effects on the environment. These mowers have come a long way from your grandpa's push reel mower.

Newer push reel mowers are lighter than they used to be, and easier to push. They also can include features like easy to adjust cutting heights, grass catchers and sharpening kits. Unlike gas mowers, they don't guzzle the money from your wallet with high gas prices, and are generally cheaper than gas mowers in the first place. They also don't make noise like gas mowers, which will have your neighbors thanking you if you like to mow early in the morning or right in the middle of their family barbeques on Sunday afternoons. Unlike most electric mowers, they don't require any kind of cords, which saves you the hassle of remembering to plug them in.

Gas mowers cause air pollution. They spit out a multitude of things like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides. These kinds of pollutants affect the ozone, and can be harmful to our health. This alone is a great reason to switch to a push reel mower, as it becomes more and more important for people to use environmentally friendly products and practices.

In addition to the environmental advantages to reel mowers, there are also advantages for your lawn. Gas mowers cut grass with a jagged edge, while reel mowers have a clean cut. Jagged edges mean that your lawn will be more susceptible to disease and moisture loss. You will have a healthier lawn with a push reel motor, and may even become the envy of the neighborhood.

Although today's push reel mowers are much easier to use than in he past, an added benefit is that you may have to work just a little harder than if you use a self propelled mower, which gets your heart rate up (and yes, that does count towards your workout time).

So, whatever your motivation is for looking into push reel lawn mowers, there are definite advantages to them. Who knows? You might just find that while you are helping the environment, you're also helping your lawn (and yourself) be healthier.

The Rockwell Band Saw is Quality Combined With Value in Power Saws

Low price is low quality. That is not true with the Rockwell band saw. Even if it has a very affordable price, the Rockwell saw is durable and performs reliably and accurately.

Low price is equal to low quality. In the advent of China-made products, that old business maxim never sounded so truthful. Just compare super affordable blue jeans that came out of a run-down factory in China to a rather expensive one produced by one of few remaining factories in the US. Which possesses finer cloth quality? Which retains its color longer? The question is almost a no-brainer: Blue jeans made in the US are just better quality.

Yet there are times when low-priced does not necessarily translates into low quality. There are exceptions to the rule, as the old saying goes. There are still manufacturers that produce high quality products at affordable rates. What is the secret to their low rates? Sweat-shop labor rates ranks as the obvious first thought, but it is not.

Almost two-third of the total cost of an expensive product from so-called big companies comes from expensive advertisements, such as NASCAR and other pro sports sponsorships, as well as rather exorbitant bonuses to company big wigs. The fact is that only about one-third of the total market cost is the actual price.

At Rockwell, the prevailing philosophy is keep things simple. They do not spend much on expensive ad campaigns over the TV and internet. Nor do they sponsor mega sporting events. And their bosses do not command sky-high bonuses. That is why they sell their products at such a low rate without compensating quality.

Thus it is definitely true that a Rockwell band saw is both low-priced and high-quality.

If you are a woodworking enthusiast or a metalworking fanatic, then maybe you should consider getting a Rockwell band saw for your workshop. Why choose a Rockwell saw aside from the low price? Two common reasons are that they are very reliable and durable.

One particular example is the Rockwell nine inch band saw. With a 2.5 amp motor, the Rockwell nine inch band saw is one of the most affordable bench-top band saws out in the market. It does not, however, mean that its performance is subpar compared to other band saws made by bigger saw makers.

The Rockwell nine inch band saw is made of tough materials, such as aluminum. Do not belittle the size of this bench-top saw, for it can definitely perform heavy-duty work from hours on end. And the great thing is that it has mechanisms that will ensure you to make accurate cuts over and over and over again.

That certainly is a big bonus when you are using a band saw. Whether you are a woodworker or a metalworker, one thing that you do not want to do is to make inaccurate cuts. It would be time consuming doing repeat cuts, so a band saw that would offer optimum precision would really provide a great help. And that is what Rockwell band saw can do in a daily basis.

In terms of durability, the Rockwell band saw ranks as one of the best. It is one of Rockwell's major commitments: making durable saws. And that is not just plain talk. Just search the internet and you will find an online auction site that sells vintage Rockwell 14 inch band saw that was made way back in the late 80s or early 70s.

5 Effective Spring Lawn Care Tips

Your lawn has different maintenance needs for every season. When spring arrives, be sure to apply these five specific lawn care tips so that your grass will not only look great during this period but will also maintain its appearance throughout summer and fall.

1. Tune up Your Mower
First things first! Get your mower and give it a full tune up. It must be in good condition before you cut the lawn otherwise it will be difficult to maneuver and you'll cause severe damage to the grass. So go ahead and change the engine's oil, filter and other parts that need special attention. Dull blades will make the mowing much longer since it cannot cut the grass effectively, so remember to sharpen the mower's blades as well.

Don't panic if you don't know how to tune up the equipment! You can always seek help from a lawn mower expert. Though you'll have to pay a small fee, you'll definitely have a more efficient mower in just a short while.

2. Remove Crabgrass and Other Weeds
Crabgrass and other kinds of weeds are more likely to pop out during spring, so inspect the entire lawn area and remove them right away before they start producing seeds and multiply. You can pull them out manually if you're into organic gardening, or you can depend on a weed control agent for a more convenient method. The earlier you're able to detect and remove weeds, the better because they won't have the chance to spread out and ruin your lawn.

3. Apply Some Fertilizer
For a great-looking spring lawn, use a recommended brand of fertilizer for your soil to make your grass greener and healthier. However, be cautious of the amount you apply because too much of it will bring negative results. Overdosing the lawn will lead to several disease and encourage weed growth, so find out the appropriate application for your specific soil and grass type and follow it correctly.

4. Seed Bald Spots
The presence of brown patches on the lawn is a sign that the grass is weakening. The moment you discover a bald spot on your turf, make sure you attend to it immediately before the grass dies completely. The best way to address this problem is to seed the affected areas as soon as possible. Although reseeding is often implemented during fall, you can also do it this season especially if your lawn is in big trouble. So get a hold of those seeds and start planting so that the bald spots will be gone right away!

5. Rake the Lawn
Lastly, do some raking during springtime in order to get rid of thatch that's highly dangerous to the grass. Even though you've already taken care of the leaves last fall, raking is also recommended this season especially if your lawn has a thatch buildup of more than half an inch. So make sure to set aside some time to rake so that you're not only removing the leaves but the thatch as well.

Why Use Roller Lawn Mowers?

If you are interested in gardening then lawn mower is nothing new to you. It is a gardener's good friend and it is a very convenient device to assist you with the maintenance of your garden and give it a very petite and chic look. There are many types of mowers but the one that is old school yet has that unique design that makes it one of the most effective designs in the lawn mower category are the roller lawn mowers.

This is an excellent design in tool that helps you keep your grass neat and trim and keep the lawn looking neat and good. There are many reasons for one to purchase roller lawn mowers. It is an essential device to put into the lawn to keep it in a good form and look. First reason to use roller mowers is because they help trim grass in such a manner that the water drains from the lawn correctly thereby making the lawn even and hence help it being flat. Then another reason for the usage of roller mowers is that when you put new grass in the garden, rolling them over with this mower helps them go deeper inside the ground and thus promoting deeper roots and good germination giving the lawn a lush look. This is one way to establish deeper and healthier grass that will bear the right green look in its robust growth.

The lawns should be mowed periodically to keep them in a flat and a even state. There are rodents who build up holes and humps in the lawn and these gaps in the lawns cause frost heaving where the ground alternately freezes and thaws which result in a very uneven surface. The use of roller mowers eliminates this problem as well.

Lawn Mowers - Buying Guide

There are different kinds of Lawn Mowers with different facilities available. Buying a Lawn Mower as any other appliance depends on the need and the usage of the buyer. The usage varies according to the size of the lawn to be maintained, the physical ability of the user and the application of the machine as mulching, side way discharging or bagging.

There are Walk-behind Mowers either self propelled or electric Mowers, Gas Powered Mowers and Riding Mowers and more which has different features and facilities useful according to the growth and the thickness of the grass.

If your lawn is small and is maintained regularly well a walk behind mower should be sufficient that works on Corded Electricity or Gasoline or on a powered Battery. The performance of the mower will not differ on what power it works. If the lawn is quite big that spreads more than an acre or so a Riding Mower should be preferred. Though expensive than the walk behind mower it justifies its price with a wide cutting blade that mow the land more quickly and efficiently.

There are also Lawn Tractors and Garden Tractors that are much needed for far bigger lawns of about 3 plus acres. They too have comparatively larger cutting blades with fine turning ability which mows hard and coarse grass in no time.

The prices range higher with every added feature or facility of the mowers.

The other basic technical details that should be borne in mind apart from the models are:

o The engine horsepower minimum of 5.5 for an easy performance

o A pretty large rear wheel for a smooth run

o A minimum of 20 Inches of cutting blade width for a quick mow.

There are sophistries too in the mowers as a comfortably adjustable seat and other attachments. Just think of the need it is used and the budget planned for the lawn mower.

Good Luck for a best buy that suits you.

Making Gardening Easy With Lawn Tractor Attachments

Lawn tractor attachments are for the lawn tractor which when they people first see is immediately confused with the lawn mower. For one thing, the two have totally different functions, the other thing, a mower can only do one thing, mow, while a tractor is one unbeatable multi-tasker that serious gardeners and garden lawn designers insist to have as part of their essential equipments.

With such tractor, gardeners can basically do whatever their heart's desire: planting, weeding, towing, and a whole of a lot of things, it just depends on which lawn tractor attachments are on for the moment. Take this tractor as the jack of all trades among your equipments. Think of the tractor attachments as accessories of your tractor. Each accessory has a specific function, a specific task to do, all depending on your needs or whims. You want to move something or till the soil, the different attachments will readily make those tasks fast and easy.

If moving snow in winter is too much to think about, the blade, snow thrower, and even snow blower will make small time out of that. Clearing out mess like that in ditches, or to make the sides of the street clear so you could park your car, the right attachment will do that as well.

If you're a farmer, and say you are motivated to move out the remaining trunk of a tree, then that is easy with the backhoe or the bucket attachments. Even putting down holes for the fence posts need not be so difficult anymore, it is easily done, however, the fences and the barbed wire you have to do yourself, lawn tractor attachments can only do so much.

The thought of having your own lawn tractor and lawn tractor attachments is a dream for some gardeners. However, the numerous attachments can be quite expensive, and sometimes not all of them are really needed with the work that you are doing presently. There is always the choice of purchasing used attachments in the likes of used tillers, used backhoe and others. Buying used equipment is a very good decision to make especially if they are in very good condition, so buy only those which are fully functional and not just fixed temporarily.

There is one important thing to remember though: children love going on awn tractors as they are attractive, easy to drive and easy to get on and off. So make sure that you warn your children off or lock it off in a safe place until such time as when you can fully go through the safety precautions with them yourself. Otherwise, have fun and put those lawn tractor attachments to good use.

Yard Machine Lawn Mowers - What You Should Know About Each One

When it comes to choosing between yard machine lawn mowers, the options are endless. There are both positive and negative factors for using each of the different types of mowers. While there are some who love using gas mowers, there are also others who hate them and only use its electric counterpart. Aside from these two, there is also another option that is available: the cordless electric mower.

Using gas powered mowers are usually more effective. This is because they are more powerful as opposed to the electric mower. However, gas mowers have several negative impacts too. Not only are they very loud, gas mowers also produce lots of exhaust and pollution. They also need oil, gas, and regular maintenance for them to keep running properly.

Simultaneously, choosing to use electric yard machine lawn mowers also has its fair share of pros and cons. While it eliminates the need for fuel and frequent maintenance, the electric mower can also be a nuisance since there are limited areas in which it can operate. Having to worry about the extension cord plugged into the power source can be a problem for those who wish to be able to mow their lawn effortlessly.

The cordless version of the electric mower, on the other hand, is a better option. While it may not be as powerful as the gasoline mowers, it still has enough power to help you cut grass. In short, the benefits of using the electric and gas mowers are combined into the cordless mower. Cordless mowers require very little maintenance, no need for gas or oil, and they do not produce pollution.

Indeed, technology has helped make yard machine lawn mowers better over the years. Manufacturers have become aware of the growing need to produce environment friendly equipment and still provide enough power. Get more information on lawn care tips and maintenance by visiting my website.

3 Points For Choosing the Perfect Garden Sheds

This article will discuss choosing the right garden shed. Garden sheds can be a great addition to the home if done properly they can add character and value to your home. Not to mention the added storage benefit that can help clear up all your clutter.

Three key points to consider when deciding the best type of garden sheds is the material, the site where you will put the shed and lastly of course your local building permits.

After working out what size shed you will want, choosing the best suited material for your purpose is next. Garden sheds are typically made of wood, plastic or metal and choosing the correct on is important. The benefits of a wood shed are it is attractive just by itself. They can generally blend with your surrounding planting scheme. And with a quick stain or paint job you can help compliment or bring out your house and garden setting. Note there will be some maintenance involved. Metal sheds are usually constructed from aluminum or color coated galvanized steel. A metal shed can be a good choice if you want a shed that needs none or very little maintenance to keep it looking good. They won't rot and are weatherproof, insect and rodent proof and believe it or not fireproof also. They are very secure which is also an added bonus if storing valuable items. The last option is plastic sheds which are made from u PVC. These can be more affordable and they are lightweight and very durable. Once again they will be low maintenance and come in handy kits or modular forms. They have come along way from the old plastic sheds.

Another aspect that is important is the alignment and siting of your shed. If you make a mistake here it could end up being troublesome and causing a lot of inconvenience. Make the choice of having your shed out in plan view or hidden away out of sight. Another point is the clearance of things surrounding your shed such as trees overhead and ground shrubs which should both be allowed one foot space. The position of your door is important to make sure you can fully swing it open. Position your windows to allow the best amount of sunlight in. If power is needed for electricity sources then it is best to position your shed close to existing power mains.

After deciding on the material to use, size of your shed and where you will site it, you should not forget to get planning permission for it. For most small sheds you will not require a building permit, however local restrictions are always different so make sure you check. One good idea is to have the contents of your shed included in your insurance home contents and that way you are covered for the loss of items like an expensive lawn mower.

That is a good start to tips surrounding choosing garden sheds. A great addition that can serve as both a workstation or storage place. The choice of material is most likely determined by by what you want to use the shed for.

Improvements in Robotic Lawn Mowers

Robotic lawn mowers are creeping their way in to everyday American life. Like the dishwasher, they were really more trouble than they were worth in the beginning. But technological advances have made the robotic lawn mower practical.

Robotic lawn mowers can now mow on a time schedule and return to the charging base all season long without human intervention, this is the breakthrough that makes them truly useful.

An advanced feature on at least one model is the self-programmable mode. As these robotic lawn mowers work they determine the size of the yard and how fast the grass is growing, when they go back to their charging base they calculate the next time they need to come out to keep the grass at the optimal height.

Rain sensors are becoming standard equipment. When it starts to rain or the sprinkler system activates, they return to their charging base. Mowing in the rain was a major complaint for early adopters.

Some robotic lawn mowers even have a wet grass detection system. Rain sensors are a step in the right direction, but it is the wet grass detection system that cures the problem. Heavy or long periods of rain can leave the grass wet and the ground soft for days. Heavier robotic lawn mowers could get stuck and dig trenches losing traction and spinning tires. Keeping bags of sand handy was just considered part of robotic lawn mower ownership.

Light weight lithium ion batteries allow mowers to cut longer and recharge much faster. In fact some can recharge in as little as 4 hours allowing the mower to go out twice a day if needed.

In addition to faster recharge times, lithium ion batteries do not have the 'memory' problems associated with lead acid batteries. Basically the memory effect is caused when a battery is not fully discharged on a consistent basis, they remember the shortened life cycle, reducing the useful length of time until the need to recharge.

Robotic lawn mowers have become more reliable too. The addition of thermistors that detect when motors are overheating and less heat sensitive circuit boards and higher quality components extend the life expectancy past 10 years, about the same as a new quality riding lawn mower.

Robotic lawn mowers are now pretty much maintenance free. Changing the blade once a year and winter storage is about all the attention needed on a routine basis.

Robotic lawnmowers are now able to handle yards as small as 1/8 acre up to 5 acres. Depending on the model, they can handle slopes of up to 30 degrees. All major brands of robotic lawn mowers are waterproof and can remain outdoors all mowing season long.

Residential robotic lawn mowers require a perimeter wire similar to an electric dog fence to be laid prior to operating. Laying the wire is a one-time event that will last the life of the mower.

Setting the perimeter wire is probably the scariest part of purchasing a robotic lawn mower. It is not difficult to stake the wire in place. It usually takes about 3 hours for 1,000 ft. of wire. The wire need not be buried as the grass and roots will grow over it in about 2-3 weeks.

If the mower should cross the wire boundary it will immediately stop. So there is no need to worry about it running away or mowing the neighbor's yard.

Operating the robotic lawn mower is simple, actually easier than programming a VCR. In theory, programming the mowing schedule need only be done at the beginning of the season. The LCD screens have full instructions and are easy to read.

There are quite a number of internet sites that have detailed information about specific features of the different models of robotic lawn mowers. Hopefully this general description will give readers the interest to look into these new appliances.

Robomow - 3 Benefits This Robotic Lawn Mower Could Bring

There are those who say that it can have its benefits. Most only think about it briefly and then become so busy doing things their usual way they have no time to really try it. Sometimes they stick to the old ways because they are afraid of the new. Sometimes it's because they don't understand it. Not knowing how stops others. Still others may just be unaware of the benefits they could enjoy.

Things always become clearer once you get more information. Maybe we need to look at the reasons that have motivated others to use Robomow.

First off, robot lawn mowers are the future and they have become very popular lately. OK, I understand you when you object that the hype may be unsubstantiated and the gadget probably does not even work properly. That may very well be true, however there have been many reports of people being very pleased with the results of their robot lawn mower.

Second, no one likes mowing their lawn. Plus, it can be very tiring and you may get injured. And some people (particularly the elderly) may not be physically able to mow their own lawns.

Third and last, buying a robot lawn mower saves money. There's no need to pay a gardener to mow your lawn. This will mean that not only will you save money but you will also save time too. And again, you should definitely think about getting one to experience these compelling benefits!

Consider those three reasons, evaluate them, think about them. When you think about it, you can see that there are compelling reasons to consider trying to employ the help of robot lawn mowers. What about you?

In view of all that, what do you think? Shouldn't you buy a robot lawn mower?

Trouble Shooting Your Lawn Mower

The majority of gas powered movers last for about 10 years before they call for changing. A friend of mine has been using a second hand Toro for around 7 years now giving him barely minor problems.

In view of the fact that long dormant mowers are being utilized again, perhaps this material will assist you from getting an injury.

Even if you have encountered a problem or not, Rule number one is to empty the fuel tank and replenish it afterwards with clean fuel. Sealed tanks when not used for a long period of time tend to accumulate moisture inside that can cause damage to the mower's motor.

Similar to any vehicle, the motor oil must be drained and replaced with fresh oil every three months or so. Draining the old oil from your mower is a piece of cake, just remove the plug located at the bottom and tilt the mower on its side.

When the mower had difficulty starting, try cleaning the spark plug and configure the gap or it would be better to change the spark plug with a new one. Configuring the gap should be in your mower's manual.

It's also a good idea to change the fuel filter. The material inside the filter tends to get hard after some time. If your mower sounded like its choking, its time to replace that fuel filter.

In order for you to have a great looking lawn, the blades of your mower must be sharp. A dull blade won't give you a uniformly cut lawn. It is recommended to hone your blades at least two times for every mowing period and all you have to get is a metal filer.

Finally, after every use, clean your mower of trimmings from the intake to under chassis to the exhaust. To avoid corrosion, don't use water or other liquids to clean it, and so you can enjoy longer service of your lawn mower.

When you have done all of this and that lawn mower still won't work, there must be a reliable repair shop nearby to fix whatever problem you have with your lawn mower.

Little maintenance or no maintenance at all to your lawn mower will give you a bunch of trouble after some time and it could be costly.

Some Tips For Choosing the Right Lawn Mower Tires and Keeping Them Maintained

Many homeowners with big yards own a riding lawnmower to take some of the grunt work out of maintaining the lawn (or in my case, they're just fun to ride). If you own one of these machines, you should know that an important part of keeping your mower in overall good condition is to pay attention to your tires and make sure to keep them well maintained.

If you let your tires become under-inflated or let the tread wear thin, your tires could end up spinning as you use the mower, which would obviously not be good for your grass. One of the things you should keep in mind when first purchasing your riding mower is to make sure you choose good tires in the first place to help deter this problem.

As with purchasing tires for your car, truck, or other vehicle, you need to take a few things into consideration when choosing the right ones for your mower. First thing of course is to make sure you get the correct size for your particular mower model. This may seem like a daunting task since there are so many different sizes, but the tires are marked, so just write these numbers so you have easy access to that info when shopping.

Next, you will have to consider the type of terrain where you will be running your lawn mower. There are several different types of tires that correspond to the different types of terrain; for example you could be riding on soft and moist land, or something dryer and harder. Whatever the case, it's good to know what land you'll be using the mower on ahead of time so you can get the optimal tires for your particular type of lawn.

If you want to get a lot of high quality use from your tires, you need to check up on the air pressure at least once a week and inflate as needed. When mower tires where out, 9 times out of 10 the problem is due to not checking the air pressure often enough, so get in the habit of checking every week and your tires should last you for years to come.

Why Buy a Cordless Lawn Mower?

If you've got a lawn, then you're going to need to be mowing it pretty regularly. It is good exercise, but it's also probably something that most of us would rather not be doing! So, you want to make it as easy as possible - why not invest in a modern cordless lawn mower? They may cost a little more money than the traditional electric or gas powered types, but can repay the extra investment with time saved, improved safety and many other benefits.

What Are Cordless Lawn Mowers?

Put simply, cordless lawn mowers are electric lawn mowers but instead of being tethered to a wall socket with the longest extension lead you can find, they contain a battery that can be recharged in order to provide enough power to mow your lawn. In this way, they can give you the freedom of a gas powered mower with the advantages of an electric mower.

So What are the Advantages?

Safety and Cordless Lawn Mowers

A key advantage of cordless lawn mowers compared to other types is their safety. OK, anything with a rapidly spinning blade is always going to include an element of danger, but at least there's no danger that the spinning blade might accidentally come into contact with the live electrical cable powering it, as there is with an electric mower. Of course, you should always use a circuit breaker, but isn't it better just to take this out of the equation?

Being powered by electricity rather than gas means that you don't have to transport, store and fill the mower with very flammable gasoline, so giving an obvious safety benefit over gas powered mowers.

Other Advantages

With a gas mower you should change its oil, air filter and spark plug each year and drain the fuel before storing it away at the end of the mowing season. None of that is needed with electric and cordless mowers - all you really need to do is sharpen the blades once or twice a year (as you would with any mower).

Gas powered mowers can take a lot of space, so if your shed or garage is on the small side this could be a good reason to go for a cordless mower. Most models can even be hung on the wall to save space if necessary giving them a big advantage over gas. They're also generally lighter in weight so making them easier to handle and manoeuvre.

I won't try and claim that electric mowers are silent, but they're a lot quieter than typical gas powered models. Anyone using a gas mower may quickly find they're in need of a pair of ear defenders! A quieter electric model will certainly make you more popular with the neighbours.

These days, environmental factors are also an issue, and of course a cordless lawn mower wins again over a gas powered model. Of course nothing's perfect - lead-acid batteries are not exactly environmentally friendly to dispose of, and the electricity has to be generated somehow, but using a cordless lawn mower will certainly reduce emissions over gas powered models.

Choosing a Cordless Lawn Mower

Cordless lawn mowers are really no different in the way they operate than corded electric or gas models. The big difference is in how easy they are to use and maintain and how much better they are for the environment. Let's look at some of the reasons to consider one of these mowers.

People are a lot more aware of being environmentally-friendly these days, even when compared to just a decade ago. Electric mowers are better than gas powered models for a couple of reasons. First, they're a lot quieter, which helps your neighbors' environment since they won't have to listen to that noisy gas mower.

Second, they don't spit out the same kind of air pollution as gas powered models, so they're better for the overall environment as well. The only drawback to a cordless electric mower as far as being green goes is the battery will eventually need to be disposed of.

The main reason to choose a cordless electric mower over a model that plugs in is the freedom it gives you. You won't be tethered to an extension cord to limit how far you can go. And you won't have to worry about running over the cord with the mower itself.

When compared with a corded mower, cordless models are a little bit heavier to push around because of the battery. But they still tend to be lighter than a comparable gas mower, so it's not the end of the world.

One downside to battery powered lawnmowers is that you will be limited by the amount of cutting you can get done on a single charge. Most cordless mowers will give you up to an hour of use from a single charge, so it will depend on the area you need to cover whether this is enough.

If you get a model that has a removable battery, you might be able to buy an additional one to swap out mid-job if you have more area to cut than a single charge will allow. Just make sure you plug the mower in when you're done so it's ready the next time you want to use it!

Important Information About Lawn Mower Repair Parts to Help You Maintain Your Mower

When you have a lawn mower of your own, you are going to have to keep it properly maintained. This means that it will be important that you know simple information about lawn mower repair parts so you can take care of your mower properly. Maintenance becomes much easier when you are familiar with the parts for repairing it. Here is a look at some important information that can help you out.

First of all, you need to have a basic understanding of different types of mowers. You need to know what the difference is between a rotary mower and an electric one. The engine type is also going to be important knowledge when it comes to understanding different lawn mower repair parts. There are two stroke and four stroke cycles, which you need to understand.

Many of the parts that you are going to need to repair your mower will be easy to found. Spark plugs are one example. Usually they are easily found and if you are having starting problems they may fix the problem. If you are having difficulty with mower operation, sometimes the air filter can be a problem and that is a repair part easily found and replaced. Just remember, any parts that are not working as they should or that are damage can end up affecting the lifespan of your mower, so you need to repair or replace them.

Another of the important parts to be aware of on your lawn mower is the blade. This is what actually cuts the blade and you need to ensure that the blade is in great condition. Blades that are dull will essentially chop and tear at the grass, making it look bad. It is important that blades are kept sharp. You can have them sharpened, which will keep you from having to purchase lawn mower repair parts like brand new blades, which are much more expensive than having your blades sharpened.

Understanding the difference between lawn mower repair parts and lawn mower attachment parts is going to be important as well. There are plenty of people that get them confused. When you have to replace something on the mower to make it work again or to make it work better, this is a repair part. On the other hand, if you are looking for something like a clipping bag or a mulcher, this is considered to be an attachment part.

When you are ready to go about purchasing the parts for the repair of your lawn mower, you have a couple of options. You can purchase from a local shop in the area, or you can buy online. There are pros and cons to both options. Often you will find better deals on the web, but you really have to be knowledgeable and know what you are looking for before you buy parts online. If you are not sure what you need, do plenty of research or take time to talk to a lawn mower professional that can give you the information you need.

4 Fall Garden Tasks That You Should Do

Fall is a time when the garden is winding down, but the garden work isn't! There are things that need to be done that you really shouldn't put off until spring. If you want your garden to produce healthy plants next spring, there are some tasks you need to take care of in the fall.

Clean up. This pretty much sums up all the garden tasks that need to be done in the fall. You should do a thorough cleaning of the garden and your yard in general. Debris and decaying plants are the favorite places of pests and rodents. You don't want to provide housing for these destructive creatures so make sure you eliminate all possible hibernating options. Many dead plants also harbor fungus and other plant diseases, so you want to get those out of your garden as soon as possible. Letting them sit for the winter may create a bigger fungus problem in the spring!
Cut back your plants - with caution! It is time to dead head the perennials and cut back any extra growth. But take care when you are cutting back plants, especially roses. When you trim or prune a woody plant like roses the process causes the plant to jump start the growing process. So instead of entering a dormant period, the plant will have a growth spurt. This tender growth cannot survive a hard frost so your plant will be damaged if you prune it in the fall. Make sure you are only cutting back perennials and not woody shrubs and bushes.
Fertilize. Now is the time to put a winter fertilizer on your lawn and around your trees and shrubs. There are several different brands of lawn fertilizer that are made specifically for winter fertilizing. Most of these fertilizers contain extra phosphorous that will help encourage root growth. Many lawns have just survived the searing summer temperatures and their roots are tired and weak. The winter fertilizer will help the roots grow strong before cold temperatures set in and then you will have a beautiful lawn come spring. It is also important to fertilize around shrubs and trees. If you have cleaned up good around your yard, as you should, then you have removed any materials that would decay naturally and provide nutrients to the trees and shrubs. This can be fixed by adding slow release nitrogen into the soil around the trees and shrubs and working it gently into the soil. You should also add phosphorous in the form of bone meal around any flowering shrubs and trees to encourage beautiful blossoms.
Plant bulbs. How many times do you drive around in the spring and admire all the beautiful tulips, daffodils and hyacinths? Fall is the time to plant spring blooming bulbs so you will have vibrant color just like everyone else. When you buy bulbs, make sure you get them from a nursery or mail order. Many of the bulbs you find at discount stores and big box stores are not high quality. You will still get a pretty blossom out of them, but not the large gorgeous blooms you will get from high quality bulbs. When you are selecting bulbs for planting, stay away from any that are soft or very small. The larger and firmer the bulb, the healthier your plant will be. When you plant the bulbs, add a small scoop of bone meal in the bottom of the hole to give the bulb a little shot of phosphorous which is essential for good blossoms.

Many people are excited about gardening in the spring, but want to be done with it long before winter arrives. But, if you spend some time in your garden in the fall you will be rewarded with a healthier yard in the spring.

Top Ten Reasons to Buy a Reel Lawn Mower

Buying a reel lawn mower can be a dicey proposition. There are a lot of rumors out there that give reel mowers a bad name. While some of them may be true of older reel mowers, today's reel push mower is completely different and more reliable than the ancient models. However, if you need some convincing take a look at the following ten reasons below on why you should buy a reel lawn mower.

It's Lightweight. Reel mowers typically weigh only 15-20 pounds. This is a great deal because you not only save on shipping costs (which usually price by the weight) but also you can lift the reel mowers over things in your shed if need be or just hang them on the wall.

It's Environmentally Friendly. These mowers are great for the environment because they are human powered, they don't pollute one bit. There are no smelly lawnmower fumes to deal with, you don't have to worry about if you have enough gas and it's just easier on the environment not to mention yourself.

You'll Save Money. Because you're not buying gas to power the mower, you'll be saving tons of money in the long run. If a gallon of gas costs roughly $3 and you use about a gallon to mow your lawn and you mow your lawn twice a week then you'll save over $168. Obviously your situation could be different but in a scenario such as this the mower pays for itself in around 4 months

They are Easy to Maneuver. Because reel mowers are so light they are very versatile which makes them easy to maneuver around difficult places like trees, flower gardens, and other tight spots that other mowers have difficulty getting. They're also so much easier to push uphill because of their weight that if you have a hilly yard it's practically a must.

Reel mowers are also healthier for your lawn than the spinning blades on other mowers. Because the reel mowers use a sheering motion, the grass is clipped much more evenly and healthily than other blades. Normal mowers will rip the grass often tearing it unevenly and leaving it exposed for insects and diseases to attack the weakened plant.

You can't beat the price of a these reel lawn mowers. Because of modern manufacturing practices, reel mowers are being constructed of high quality, yet cheaper parts and labor. This makes the reel mowers extremely economical and efficient. Even if you already have a primary mower, a reel mower will make a terrific secondary mower that someone else can use if you're busy with the first one or if it runs out of gas, breaks down, etc.

Reel lawn mowers are great for small lawns. If you live in a city or even the suburbs that you have just a little bit of lawn to mow, it doesn't make sense to get a giant mower. These mowers are small and easy to store under a deck or in a tiny shed and they get the job done in no time. In fact they are ideal for a small lawn.

It's easy to sharpen the blades. The best way to get a professional looking lawn is to have sharp blades. It doesn't matter what mower you have, the sharper the blades the better the cut. With gas powered mowers it can be very difficult getting the blade loose and then having it sharpened and re-installing it. With reel mowers, it takes maybe 15 minutes to sharpen the blades with a special kit (which only costs $15 bucks or so).

Safer than other mowers. Reel mowers are human powered so when you stop pushing the blade stops turning. You don't have to worry about leaving the mower running while you try to clear clumps of grass and you don't have to worry about shooting stones and sticks out the shoot towards the house. Reel mowers have a small blade guard that prevents you from getting your hand stuck in the blades (which only could really occur when your sharpening it).

It's quieter than other mowers. Because there is not gas powered motor there's no noise. There's a quiet sheering sound as the blades pass over the sheering blade. So it doesn't matter if you're an early riser or a late night mower, you can get the lawn done quickly and quietly at any time.

Can a Robot Really Mow Your Lawn?

Let me start off by saying I have been using this mower now for three seasons. I am really passionate about robotic lawnmowers. I have the Lawnbott LB3250.

I still find myself stopping and looking out the window of the house in disbelief that a robot is mowing my lawn. At least once, if not more times, per day people stop in the street and stare at the mower wondering what it is. I have gotten to the point that I have put a sign on top of the mower telling what it is, where you can buy one and how much it costs. Unless you have a lawn service already doing the mowing, you can't believe how much time mowing your lawn actually takes. A Lawnbott will free you from that duty and give you more free time to do things you like.

Here is the basic operation of the mower:

If you live in the Midwest like me, you start this mower some time in the spring, March or April, when the snow is out of the yard. Generally I don't touch it until the late fall when the grass stops growing, November or so.

I have to be kidding right? When do you start it, recharge it?

The mower decides what days and how often per day to mow. Yes it can mow more than one time per day. My mower can go 5 hours per charge, drive back to the base and recharge only to come back out and mow if necessary.

That is pretty much it. Trim the yard around the bushes and the tiny areas it doesn't get. Really!

How does it know when to mow?

That is a really good question. I don't do software code writing so I can't tell you any more than it just does. It will adjust the amount of mowing it does depending on how fast the grass is growing and how large your lawn is. The LB3250 (and all the models) detects the load on the cutting motor and determines that the grass is deep or not deep.

How long does it take to mow the lawn?

This really is a moot point. You have to change the way you think about mowing the lawn. This mower will just go and go and go and eventually it is done. Your grass will stay the same height all year long. No more tall grass, short grass, tall grass, short grass. No more giant clumps of grass laying in your lawn turning brown after you mow.

What does it run on?

The mower has one or two 24 volt batteries depending on the model.

How do you charge it?

You don't, it does. When the battery gets to a set point, the mower will make a return trip around the perimeter wire, trimming as it goes, to the charging house and park itself.

What if it rains?

That is a pretty good question. If it rains the mower can do two things. It will go back to the charging house and wait until you come out and push the start button or it can wait for 24 hours and try to come out again. If the rain sensor detects rain, it will then go back to the house and wait more, repeat, repeat, etc.

But I have hills, it can't do them can it?

Yes, it can do pretty darn steep hills. 27 degrees is the limit of hills most of the models can handle. The LB3500 series can do 30 degree hills. It might not sound steep but a 27 degree hill is steeper than any riding mower will handle with the exception of the National Greens Mower. Granted, to do this grade, you will need the optional spiked wheels and wheelie bars. How do I know? I have them for my mower.

How loud is this thing?

Put it this way, you can't hear it when you are in the house. In fact, you really can't hear it if you are 50 feet away. It is quieter than your dishwasher (unless you have a Bosch like I do). You will start to get annoyed at gas mowers in the neighborhood because they are so loud. This thing can sneak up on you at night. It has a blinking light in the front so you can see it at night.

What if it leaves the yard?

You don't have to worry about this. If the mower leaves your perimeter wire area it will hunt for the wire by turning in a circle. If after a few seconds it doesn't see the wire it will shut down and beep. The LCD will display a message, "Out of bounds". You just pick it up and restart it in your yard. This can happen when you have a 90 degree corner in the wire (a no, no in the setup) or it slides on a steep, wet slope and you don't have the spiked wheels. I experienced both of these and learned from them.

Won't it hurt my dogs or kids?

If the mower is picked up, the blade immediately stops. You have the option of putting a start-up password in so if you want the mower won't be able to start again unless you key in the password. The blade has a guard around it so wayward fingers are protected quite a bit from accidental injury. Now understand this, it is a lawn mower. If someone intentionally finds a way to get the wheels off the ground, tilt the mower and reach around the guard, they are going to get hurt. But then again, no amount of protection can prevent a truly stupid person from doing a truly stupid thing, you can't fix stupid

The big brother of my LB3250, the LB3500, has a feature that stops the blade as soon as someone touches the rear handle. Honestly, it has never been an issue for me. I have a 4 year old and 6 year old and neither goes near the mower. They call it Moe.

The neighbors have a dog, one of those little barky things that bark at a leaf. It ignores this mower.

Someone will steal it won't they?

The mower will not work outside your yard. The perimeter wire sends a coded signal that tells the mower it is in an approved yard. Without this signal, the mower will not start. (there is a dealer diagnostic mode that bypasses this but how many thieves are dealers or even know how to enter this diagnostic mode) The mower also has a built in alarm that will sound if someone picks up the mower and tries to carry it away from your yard. That should be enough to deter nearly everyone. According to the manufacturer, no one has ever reported one of their mowers stolen.

My house insurance will go up won't it?

My insurance has not changed and my agent knows I have this mower because I listed it specifically on my policy.

Setup:

The first thing you do is mow your lawn one last time. It states this in the owner's manual. This makes laying the perimeter wire so much better and eliminates cut stripes in your lawn from the first mowing. Read on for more.

The initial setup of the mower might seem a little daunting at first. It will take you a Saturday afternoon, but so does mowing. You have to place a perimeter wire around your yard, like an underground wired dog fence. The big difference between the mower's wire and the dog fence is you don't have to bury the mower's wire. It just sits on top of the grass held in place with pegs.

After about 6 weeks of grass growth, it is integrated into the lawn and you can't see it.

After a full season, the wire is actually under the lawn and you will have trouble finding it. I have around 3/4 acre that is mowed by my LB3250 and setting up the wire took me about 2.5 hours. If you have bushes or trees you don't want the mower to hit, just put a loop of wire off the main line around this bush and it gets included in the perimeter and is protected from getting bumped into by the mower.

The perimeter wire acts not only as a fence to keep the mower in but also as a follow line for edging the yard when it is done with the cutting cycle for the given period.

Throughout the year:

The first day you have the mower and it goes out you will stand there and stare at it. No doubt in my mind. Then it will go back to its house at the end of the cycle and your lawn will not be completely mowed. (but you did mow before installation so it won't be that noticeable. I didn't read the manual and thought "I just spent how much?!!!" ) The same thing the second day, but by the third day your lawn will be nearly entirely done. Remember, you aren't mowing so give it time to learn your lawn. It appears to drive around randomly and couldn't possibly get everything. It will.

You will find in the beginning that your mower will be getting stuck here and there in places of your lawn that there is a hole, rock or something else you didn't see or consider. Just fill them in with topsoil or sand and grass seed. After some initial futzing around, the mower needs very little attention. Your border needs to be set up in such a way that the mower won't slide into a pond, off a ledge or something else like that.

There are various suggested distances in the setup guide to tell you how far to place the perimeter wire from these obstacles. Follow them and you'll keep the mower for a long time. As the manufacturer told me, the mower is waterproof but it only works as a submarine one time before you have to buy a new one.

Maintenance:

You really only have to flip the blade over in the middle of the season. It has 8 sharp edges, 4 on each side. The blade on my LB3250 is about 12" in diameter and about as thick as the cardboard on a cereal box. You'll have to replace the wheel motor brushes after about 4 years or so, but that isn't hard or expensive. Everything mechanical needs some type of maintenance. You just won't be changing oil, adding gas, getting tune ups, etc.

How long will it last?

The mower come with a 12 month warranty on all parts. Well, I have had mine for two years now. The outer shell is showing scratches and one crack in the lower edge. All of this was caused by me not completely following the perimeter setup and the mower impacting something it wasn't designed to impact, retaining walls in the front and sides and dropping off a retaining wall edge cracking the cover.

A nice side note is that when a part goes bad, the warranty on that part begins again.

The batteries are rated to last 5 seasons. At $300 each they aren't cheap but they are cheaper than 5 seasons of gas and going to get the gas and futzing with changing the oil and tune ups, etc. Your time isn't free remember.

Winter Storage:

Bring it inside and put it on the winter charger to maintain the battery. While in storage it is the perfect time to sharpen the blade which you can do with a kitchen knife sharpener. That is the extent of winter storage.

Cost of Operation:

It costs about $10 a year (if you leave it turned on in the winter too mind you) in electricity to charge and run the perimeter wire to run the mower. No gas, no oil changes.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions on this mower that aren't explained here. jspahn@mac.com

Buying the Right Used Tractor Lawn Mower For Your Needs

Many people today have their own lawn mowers for their homes needs. They need to have something that will help them take care of the lawns. People could hire others to mow their lawns, but that can become expensive quickly. Having your own lawn mower makes everything a lot easier and you can take care of your lawn anytime.

Buying a brand new lawn mower can be very expensive. Not everyone always has the money necessary to purchase a new mower. As a result many of them look to getting a used lawn mower for their needs. Many of the used lawn mowers on available today are priced as much as 50% below the sticker price of a brand new one. This is a huge savings for anyone. When looking into larger tractors it can easily add up to hundreds of dollars that is now in your pocket and not the garden supply companies.

There are many places that people can turn for used lawn mower listings. An excellent place to start is with your local classified ads. Many people will advertise their products in the classifieds since they are usually reasonable priced and reach a large audience. Another option is to check different dealers and websites. Sometime dealers have older mowers that they purchased and refurbished. When you purchase a refurbished model from a dealer it will most likely come with a warranty or additional coverage. This is almost like getting a new mower for a lower price. An expensive lawn mower is an investment even if it's used. A warranty is a great thing to have that will help your recover your expenses if any problems arise in the future.

It's always best to check the condition of the mower before you spend any money on it. You want to make sure that you're getting a quality machine that will last. If you aren't familiar enough with the mechanics of the mower to make sure it will work correctly then bring a mechanic or other friend that is. They can look it over and tell whether or not it's worth the money.

It's also important to remember how big a machine you're going to need. There is no reason to buy a huge tractor model when you only have a small yard. Getting the correct size will save you time and money since you're not buying more machine than you need. Whatever type of mower you buy make sure that it works correctly before purchasing it.

How To Replace Lawn Mower Tires

Lawn Mower Tires - The Essential Difference

The essential difference in replacing a car tire and flat tire of a lawn mower is,

* You do not carry a spare tire with you all the time when you move along with your lawn mower.

* Your equipments for replacing the tire like jack, spanners etc. are not with you, they are in your basement workshop.

* Your house is nearby so you can summon help from your family members.

* You may not be in a hurry to change the tire and you are not putting anyone to difficulty by leaving a vehicle with a flat tire on your premises, as you would if you leave your vehicle on a public road.

* You can change the tire at a more convenient time.

* Depending upon the size of tire, you may require some external help.

Changing the tire

A lawn mower works on an undulating surface too. Therefore if your tire has gone flat where not all the tires are on a level surface, do not try to change a flat tire at that place. Depending upon where the tire has gone flat, you can change the following procedure slightly, but ensure that the spirit of safety precautions is not violated.

If you have a portable air compressor with you, (even a foot operated one will do), try to inflate the tires and then shift your lawn tractor to a flat and level surface, it will be best for the tractor. If you do not have an air compressor and the flat area is nearby, take your tractor in, as is condition, to the flat surface. The lawn mower tires are a rugged lot. The tire will take this punishment without a murmur.

The procedure for changing the tire is as follows.

* You have already brought the tractor on a flat and level surface. Park it there. Shut off the engine. Pull the hand brake and remove the tractor keys in order to prevent accidental re-starting.

* Clean the tire to be replaced and the area around the tire with water. This will take away any dirt from the nuts holding the tires and reduce the work load on you while taking out the tire.

* Loosen the nuts holding the tire slightly. Make it a point to ensure that all the nuts are loosened slightly. Any one remaining to be loosened might give you a problem later on. Do not back off completely. Just loosen them and that is all. If you are not in a position to back off even a single nut, do not proceed further. Retighten the loosened nuts and ask for professional help.

* Fix up other wheels with a wheel lock or slip a wooden plank or a stone so that the wheel may not move. Do this to two wheels at least.

* Next slip a hydraulic jack or a crew jack at a convenient place on the chassis, (This place is usually indicated in the maintenance manual) and raise the wheel to be replaced).

* Back off all the nuts holding the wheel and take out the wheel. You may require some help in this as the lawn wheels are slightly larger than car wheels.

* After taking out the wheel, clean the brake drum (if you have one) and wash off all the dirt that has collected, remove anything lodged in there.

* Put a new wheel and get the other one repaired.

Safety Precautions

* Wear hand gloves all the time. This will prevent injuries to your hand.

* When loosening the nuts, give particular attention to slippage of spanners. They can cause serious injuries to hand or head as you will not be able to control your movement when spanner slips.

* NEVER EVER change a tire on an undulating surface. There are many cases when the jacks have slipped from their position due to this and deaths have resulted from persons being crushed beneath lawn mower.
