5 Easy Tips to Have a Better Lawn

Maintaining a high quality lawn will require both time and effort. Knowing a few simple tricks on proper mowing will not only prevent you from causing any damage to your lawn but it will also help in making your lawn healthy and beautiful.

1. Never mow a wet lawn. This is because wet grass clippings will easily form clumps and these clumps can smother the grass below. This leads into the forming of brown spots or dead spots on your lawn. After a rain storm, it is suggested to wait at least a day or two before mowing the lawn. It is also suggested to avoid mowing right after watering the lawn.

2. Never cut more than a third of the grass' height. This is because cutting more than a third of the height of the grass will put stress on the turf. A well maintained lawn will have between 2 to 3 inches of grass which means they will need to be mowed once they reach 4 to 4-1/2 inches in height. The frequency of mowing the lawn will depend on the climate.

3. Always keep your lawn mower blades sharp. This is very important because a dull blade will only tear the grass instead of cutting it and this can lead into the browning of the tips of the grass blades. Having a sharp blade will provide a more even and effortless cut. The sharpening of the blades of a lawn mower is a part of mower maintenance. This can be done with a grinder or you can have a professional do it for you.

4. Never mow in the same direction each and every time. A lot of people have developed this habit simply because they find it more efficient doing it this way. However, doing it in the same direction each time may cause the grass to develop 'grain' similar to those found on wood because the grass that are growing off the sides do not get trimmed as evenly unlike those growing upwards. The best way to avoid this is to mow at a right angle on the direction the grass was last trimmed.

5. Never bag your grass clippings. This is because leaving the clippings behind is an easy way of returning the nutrients back to the soil thereby reducing the need for fertilizers. However, it is important to mow the grass frequently and avoid them from getting too tall so that the grass clippings will not be easily noticeable.

These five easy tips will not add nor reduce the work needed for your lawn chores and they will not make your lawn as lawn as beautiful as a golf course. They will however ensure that your lawn is healthy, green, and lush with no additional maintenance on your part.

Repair it Yourself Or Call the Expert?

We've all been there - you're heading out for a day of lawn work and your lawn mower won't start. The big question before you now, should you try to fix the lawn mower yourself or should you call the experts? Here are a few scenarios to help you decide whether you should attempt the lawn mower repair at home or bring it to an authorized repair person.

My Lawn Mower Won't Start
If your lawn mower will not start, check the gas tank first. Did you put the mower away for a long period of time without draining the gas tank? If so, you probably have a tank full of bad gas. Drain the tank and fill it with new gas. Check to make sure you have enough gas in the tank to get the mower running and that it is the correct kind of gas.

The Lawn Mower Starts Slowly, but Stops and becomes Difficult to Start
This is a pretty good sign that the engine is not getting enough air. Don't worry, this is not going to require a costly lawn mower engine repair! Start by checking the air filter; a clogged or dirty filter can be cleaned with a little hot water and dish detergent. Simply scrub the filter and replace it.

You also may have a bad spark plug. The mower engine will not start up if the spark plug is bad or dirty. This fix may be as simple as pulling out the old spark plugs, cleaning them and replacing them.

My Lawn Mower Is Dead
Start by unplugging the spark plugs and turning the mower over. It is extremely important to make sure the mower is not able to start up while it is turned upside down. Check various mower parts, including the blades. You are looking for string, long grass, plastic or metal stuck between the blades, as any of these items will stop the blades from working and automatically incapacitate the mower.

Look in the gas tank, at the spark plugs and at the air filter. Make sure there is gas in the tank, the spark plugs are working and the air filter is clog free.

If the mower is still not working, take off the mower engine cover. Look at how the gas flows into the engine by removing the pump cover and pushing on the rubber pump. This will show you how gas is flowing into the engine and whether there are any problems with the hose. You may just need to take a clean rag and wipe down the hose or use a small pin to clean out the injector hole.

The last place to check is the automatic shut-off connected to the accelerator, as it may have lost a spring. Look for a metal line from the shut-off mechanism to the choke; you should see a small spring that attaches to the body of the lawn mower. If it fell off, you will see two small holes where the spring used to be. You can find a replacement spring at any hardware store.

These are all relatively easy repairs that you can make at home. The rule of thumb about calling an authorized repair person is you have reached a point in the project where you no longer feel comfortable doing it on your own. No matter when you reach this point, whether it comes after you checked the gas tank or after you take off the engine cover, it's time to call a repair person.

Do not get in over your head in a repair project. When you are unsure of how to proceed but go ahead anyway, you can make the problem worse; and this only means a bigger repair bill!

Scotts 2000-20 Classic Lawn Mower Review

I have always preferred electric and gas-powered lawn mowers because of the convenience they can give. I meant, I do not have the luxury of time to mow my lawn. Not even one half of a day. I want everything fast and fierce. Everything changed when we had this worldwide economic slowdown. I had to always check my resources and make sure I have spares for the rainy days. At first, it's difficult to adjust but in time, I learned. Well, I really had no choice. Gas powered lawn mowers require high maintenance. I really cannot afford such unnecessary expense just to maintain my gorgeous lawn.

So I used the ever reliable google and did some research. I found this unappealing push reel mower. The price was really affordable. I'll just be honest, this is something that's just within my budget. I was really scared because the reviews might just be misleading. I read the pros and cons. In short, I've done my job and just risked. My other consolation was that, it's earth friendly.

Scotts Push Reel Lawn Mower is a blessing in disguise. I was really worried that I won't be able to assemble it. If you follow the manual and it will be very easy. All you have to do is screw the five sections of the handle and then clip it to the body of the mower. There are additional nuts and washers that you can use to securely connect the handle.

I was of course prepared that this mower will be powered by myself. I actually needed a good workout to shed off those extra pounds. The mower was quiet unlike the gas-powered ones. They really do not pollute. The only pollution is is your sweat! I was really surprised that it worked smoothly. I had no difficulty pushing it. I felt like Wolverine. It was obvious I enjoyed the experience.

When you buy Scotts Push Reel Lawn Mower you should be realistic. Do not set expectations that won't be met. This is very useful for small grass or weeds. Of course, it's just natural to always keep the blades oiled to maintain high performance. I really couldn't ask for more!

Self Service Your Lawn Mower and Save Money

Around where I live the small engine retail and service stores charge $75 an hour to work on lawn mowers and ride-on tractors. Most people can do the necessary basic service themselves and keep their mower running smoothly for years.

We all do it, we get to the end of the grass cutting season, shove the mower or tractor to the back of the shed and forget about it till next Spring. Don't do that this year, it will cost you money and time to get it back in working order.

What you'll need: Digital camera, SAE30 oil, wire brush, spray can of black enamel paint, heavy duty gloves, container for used oil, replacement spark plug, (just in case), face mask and cleaning rags.

Drain the fuel tank and let the engine burn the last of it from the carburetor and fuel lines. The fuel in the tanks will partially evaporate over winter leaving a residue, particularly fuels blended with ethanol which will leave a gooey mess, that's a real pain to clean out especially from the fine jets in the carburetor.

Before doing any further work on your machine, disconnect the spark plug lead. Although electrical interlocks should prevent the engine accidentally starting it's better to be safe than sorry.

Drain out the old engine oil. For most lawn mowers the drain plug is underneath in the mower deck. For others and lawn tractors the drain plug is at the base of, and on the side of the engine. Be sure to collect the oil in a container to dispose of correctly later, don't let the oil drain onto the ground.  Replace the oil drain plug. Leave the dipstick out to remind you there is no oil in the engine.

Clean dirt and grass off the mower, a small amount of debris in the engine will cause it to seize. Clean dirt from the engine cooling fins, you may have a cover to remove to do this. If this is the first time you are doing your own maintenance, have a digital camera handy to take photos as you work to ensure parts go back correctly. Take as many pictures as you need, use the zoom for close-ups, so as you put things back in place you won't waste any time figuring things out. Don't rely on your memory it will let you down!

Clean the deck, for lawn mowers tip the machine on its side, carburetor side up. Use a block of wood to wedge the blade so that it cannot move. Put on a pair of heavy duty garden gloves before removing the blade. Clean debris from the underside of the deck, wire brush and spray with black enamel paint from an auto parts dealer, always use a mask for this job. Painting the underside of the deck will prolong its life. Have a professional sharpen and balance the blade before replacing it. Then turn your mower upright.

Take out the spark plug, wire brush it clean and check the gap, 0.30" for most. If it's worn replace it with new. Take the plug to a dealer to ensure you get the correct replacement. Clean and replace carburetor air filter. Fill the engine with SAE30 oil, check manual for quantity required making sure not to over fill, then use the dipstick to check the level, let stand for a few minutes then re-check.  Wipe the dipstick to avoid an incorrect reading.

Check the condition of the starter pull cord. If damaged or frayed take the mower to a service dealer for a replacement pull cord. Replacing the cord can be difficult especially if the recoil spring is taken out of its housing and it's not a task for a beginner. Lubricate the cables and if it's self-propelled check the belts for wear and damage and replace if needed.

Wipe the machine down and store ready for next Spring and you've just saved yourself $100 or more.

MONETIZING TIPS: Offer this simple end or beginning of season service to family, friends, neighbors, church members and seniors clubs. Make up a poster on your PC with eye catching photos from the web. If you have a vehicle to transport machines so much the better. You only need a space in your garage or garden shed and a few simple tools to get started on a nice money-making business. Your camera can be a big help by ensuring you can see exactly how things came apart until you feel confident.

Which Riding Lawn Mower is Best For Me?

Large and small lawns have one thing in common. They have a need to be mowed. Push mowers can do the job, but unless you have an ultra small yard, it can be really time consuming and tiring. A great idea is to get into choosing the best riding lawn mower. These machines are amazing and can do so much work in less than half the time. You don't have to be a millionaire to afford one of these mowers either, there are great new and used tractors and other types of lawnmowers on the market, and with so many choices you are sure to find one that fits your needs.

The best place to start looking is online. Even though it's hard choosing the best riding lawn mower on the Internet, it's still a really good place to start since so many owners will go in and write reviews about their likes and dislikes of just about any mower out there. The next step, after you've narrowed down the choices would be to visit a shop that sells the machines. Most home improvement stores have a great selection to look over, and this way you can look under the hood so to speak and get a real feel for how the lawnmower would perform and what extra features it may have.

Guide to Basic Lawn Mower Maintenance

Trying to start your lawn mower after a long winter can be very frustrating. Performing a few routine maintenance tasks before you store your lawn mower for the winter can save you time in the spring, prolong the life of your lawn mower, and save you money over the long run. Even if you have already put your lawn mower into storage for the winter, a few simple maintenance tasks performed before starting your lawn mower in the spring can be very beneficial.

Wash and dry your lawn mower after the mowing season is over. A power blower can be very helpful in removing grass and debris from the underside of your lawn mower and other hard to reach areas. If your lawn mower engine is air-cooled, use a stick or wooden dowel to remove any residue from the cooling fins. If you have a lawn mower with a water-cooled engine, check the coolant level and fill the reservoir if needed. Clean the radiator cooling fins with a strong jet of water. You should also drain the fuel tank and replace the fuel filter. The air filter housing should be cleaned and the air filter replaced.

Remember to check the spark plug(s) for corrosion and wear. Don't attempt to clean the spark plug if it is showing some wear. It is cheap and easy to replace the spark plug. Be sure to remove any debris before removing the spark plug and by using a bit of anti-seize compound when you replace the old spark plug, you will ensure easier removal next year. Clean and lubricate the throttle linkages and the choke, and apply grease to the mower deck and all the fittings. This will be easier if you remove the mower deck and you can sharpen the blades while the mower deck is off. Sharpening the blades after each mowing season will give you a better cut next year and save you the trouble of having to sharpen them in the spring.

Clean the battery terminals and replace your old lawn mower battery if necessary. You can help prevent corrosion of the terminals if you apply grease to the posts at the end of each mowing season. Change the oil in the engine crankcase and replace the oil filter. You should also drain the gas from your lawn mower before storing it for the winter. During the long summer mowing season, remember to wash your lawn mower and remove any debris after the mower has cooled. Keeping your lawn mower clean will add years to its life and make routine maintenance tasks a lot easier.

Lawn mowing is a job most of us face each and every year. A lawn mower that runs great and is well maintained will make this job more enjoyable and easier all summer long. A yearly check up for your lawn mower is the perfect way to prolong its life and keep it running like new, and your lawn will look great when you mow with a machine that is in top working condition. Your lawn mower will perform at the highest level possible if you remember to perform these simple maintenance tasks each and every year. During the summer months periodically check the oil and the condition of the air and fuel filters. You will save money and your lawn mower will work great for years to come

Riding Lawn Mowers - What to Look For When Buying One

If you have a big lawn to mow and are tired of pushing a mower in the heat of summer, then you know what you must do - buy a riding lawn mower! If you have a half acre or more, you should seriously consider a riding mower. It drastically cuts down on the amount of time it takes to mow and it is much easier on your body.

Take one trip to your local home improvement store and you'll likely find over a dozen different mowers with all different features and prices. Your head will be spinning and you'll walk away more confused than ever. This article will point out some of the most important things to consider when purchasing a riding lawn mower.

Get the widest deck that you can afford. This is the number 1 most important feature on a mower. A wider cutting deck means fewer trips up and down the lawn and you'll get the job done faster. But you have to make sure that there are no obstacles or tight spots that you will have trouble fitting through. You also have to have a spot to store the mower (if you don't have a garage or shed you can buy a vinyl cover with elastic that fits over the mower).

Another option that I highly recommend is the ability to switch between mulching, bagging and just blowing the grass out to the side. There are times when you will want to bag and other times when mulching is better, so the more options you have, the better. You should also take note as to how easy or difficult it is to switch between bagging and the other options. It may involve completely removing the bagger or it may be as simple as inserting a stopper into the blade housing.

One feature that saves a lot of time and aggravation is for the mower to have the ability to drive in reverse while the blade is still spinning. Some mowers have a safety feature built in that prevents you from going in reverse until you turn off the blade. This takes a lot of extra time and is a real pain if you have to do lots of backing up around obstacles while mowing.
If you're going to spend lots of time on this riding lawn mower you should make sure that the seat is relatively comfortable and that it is adjustable. We all have different bodies and legs, so the ability to move the seat closer or farther away from the steering wheel and pedals is a must.

Some other important things to consider (though not as important as the ones already mentioned) are how loud the mower is, what other attachments can be added and does it have a cupholder? The cupholder is very useful and if I didn't have one to hold my water bottle I would have to make a lot more pit-stops and mowing the lawn would take a whole lot longer. All of these features contribute to saving time and relieving frustration, which is exactly what a riding lawn mower is supposed to do.

Tips on Picking the Right Petrol Lawn Mower

There are many things to consider when buying a petrol lawn mower. There are many different brands, and sizes, from John Deere, Toro, Black and Decker, and even Honda. These are among the top of the line brands, but there are also many others. With all the different brand names, it can sometimes get confusing, especially for the first time buyer. This is all right; there are many tips to help you find the one that fits your needs.

The first thing you need to consider when picking out the right petrol lawn mower is its ability to mulch lawn clippings, and whether it comes with its own bagging system, or whether you have to buy it extra. Mulching your lawn clippings can prevent having to pick them up, and it helps to fertilize your lawn each time you mow, saving you money in the long run. Some mower brands can mulch, bag, or side discharge clippings, and the Honda can even be adjusted to bag some of the clippings, and mulch some as well.

The next tip for you is that you should find a self propelled petrol lawn mower. This can save you a lot of time, especially if you have a large lawn. Instead of pushing the gas mower, it has driven wheels, and all you have to do is steer it in the right direction. In order to save more time, instead of buying a pull start mower, you might try an electric start mower instead. This can be a good idea for another reason, not having to worry about the pull cable breaking on day when you least expect it. This can be a pain trying to take the cover off, as well as trying to find the same length lawn mower repair part.

Now the big thing about a petrol lawn mower is going to be price. A mower can be a big investment, and some of the better models can run around $400-$500 dollars. This may be shocking, but getting a cheaper model might not be such a good idea. For one thing you really get what you pay for, and a more expensive model may be more reliable, break down less often, and you may find it easier to find lawn mower repair parts. It may also be cheaper when it comes to bringing your mower in for repairs, or routine maintenance.

You should always by a mower cover for your petrol lawn mower, even if you keep it in a garage or storage shed. Even when stored in a covered area, a mower tends to collect a certain amount of dust and moisture, especially during cold and wet winters. Having a mower cover can help keep a mower clean, dust free, and ready to use the next time you need it.

There are many different retailers that sell petrol lawn mowers, and it is a good idea to visit some of the local mower companies before you go online. You can compare brands, sizes, and price, as well as get any questions you may have answered right away. If you still are undecided, you can go online to one of the product review sites and compare features, and see customer reviews on many brands at one time.

Riding Lawn Mowers Parts

If you are one of those who works usually with lawnmowers, then you probably already know the big importance that lawn mower parts have. No matter what model of machine you drive, it will need some parts replacement after some years of use. Even the best manufacturers' models, which worked smoothly at the beginning or that model you bought being the sturdiest mower at the moment will have something broken and therefore will go wrong after few years.

Damage and wear are two of the most typical reasons for replacing lawn mower parts. Since wear refers to parts that have been working hard and do not perform as they should, damage refers to parts that are totally broken and need to be replaced completely. Wear situations come up usually due to worn parts. Unsharpened blades is a clear example of worn parts. You just need to sharpen blades and you mower will cut the lawn as a newer one. Damage situations are easy to detect because most of the times the engine doesn't start at all. It can also happens that suddenly you'd had a lawn mower break when you have only mowed half of the garden size. It becomes an annoying situation and very embarrassing as well.

One of the most typical problem for lawn mower parts replacements is when you broke off the clutch handle as well as blades sharpening. No panic when it happens, it's plenty of mower parts out there, you just need to find the part that better fits your needs. You might be thinking on how easy is to find a mower part. However, it isn't as easy task as it seems at all. Finding the most suitable part that better works with your mower might be sometimes a bit tricky. What professional gardeners use to do is to find the specific parts in a lawn mower parts catalog. But, not everyone have access to this parts catalog, specially regular home and garden owners that just want to find a small piece for their specific model.

How To Find The Right Lawn Mower Parts

The simplest way to find specific lawn mower parts is at the gardening warehouses. You can find there most parts for common mowers' manufacturers. These warehouses have the knowledge and compatibility lists for your specific model as well as most parts to get your machine mowing again. If you are lucky, your mower will run again just a few hours later, if they don't have your required part in stock, then you might order it and pick it up a couple of days later.

Toro And Simplicity Lawnmower Parts

They are two of the most reliable and truly manufacturers across the world. Toro mower parts can be bought from almost any Toro dealer as well as from any mower parts or goods warehouse that are specialized in Toro manufacturer. Like many other products, lawn mower parts are divided into subcategories inside walk-behind or riding mowers models. These subcategories are essentially the following 3:

Engine assembly for current gas powered mowers.

Handle assembly for handle parts and parts like cables.

Housing assembly for housing parts such as wheels or frames

Since Toro lawn mower manufacturer offers reliable performance machines, they are yet not the most affordable mower for homeowners. Simplicity mower parts give customers the ability to repair their lawnmowers at affordable prices. Simplicity is a truly mower and parts manufacturer focused to provided top quality for those who are confident enough to perform their own mower parts replacements. Simplicity mowers are specifically designed to make repairs quickly and easily, performance might not be so good, but enough for a small yard. However, there are also commercial simplicity mowers such as three-wheel riding mowers as well as zero-turn

6 Tips For Lawn Mower Safety

One of the most dangerous items at home is the lawn mower. Every year, over 12,000 people are injured due to accidents related to lawn mowers. What is truly awful is that many of the injured are under 18 years old.

The range of injuries includes minor burns, deep cuts, loss of toes or fingers, broken bones and a lot more. Even people in the vicinity of the lawn mower can get hurt from flying stones propelled by the spinning mower blades. To prevent accidents take note of these tips.

1) The first time you use your lawn mower, ensure you read the operation manual that came with it. The operation manual will contain safety information regarding your particular mower. Some men think they are above reading operation manuals, but it's time well-spent and could keep you or a member of your family out of the Emergency Room.

Lawn mower manufacturers don't want their customers to get hurt by their product. Which is why the manufacturer builds in certain safety devices into their lawn mowers. Do not tamper with any built-in safety devices, they are there for good reasons.

2) If you are looking to buy a lawn mower, get one that cuts power to the mower once you let go of the handle. This feature is called a dead man's switch and could save someone from a nasty injury.

3) Prior to mowing your lawn, do a visual check of the area to be cut. You are looking for any stones or other objects which could get hit by the mowers cutting blades and fly out causing injury or damage.

4) Here's a biggie... children and lawn mowers don't mix.

Although a lawn mower should only be operated by adults, many parents still let their children mow the lawn for their allowance. Don't let your child mow your lawn - it's just not worth taking the risk.

A good percentage of the injuries caused each year by lawn mowers happen to children. If your children are nearby when you are mowing the lawn, get someone to watch them. You can't afford to split your concentration between the job at hand and keep a watchful eye on the children.

And never allow children to ride the lawn mower - It's not a toy. Many child related accidents are caused by children falling off lawn mowers and getting badly injuried by the machine or the fall.

5) Always wear suitable footwear when you are mowing the lawn. Footwear that can protect your toes from the powerful motor, should a mishap occur. It should go without saying that bare feet or sandals are a big no.

6) If your lawn mower is gasoline powered, store the gas outside, not inside the garage or tool shed. Likewise, fill up the fuel tank in the open air. The reason for this is that gasoline gives off highly flammable fumes, which can build up in enclosed spaces. It could only take one spark to set alight these fumes and cause serious injury and damage.

Put these lawn mower safety tips into action and not only will you have a healthy lawn, but you will stay healthy as well.

Lawn Mower - The Safety Guidelines

Although a walk behind or riding lawn mower may not be the most dangerous household power tool, it is certainly capable of causing injury and even death. A lawn mower is a machine that should be treated with respect. So long as the operator follows a simple set of safety guide lines, many serious and potentially life threatening situations can be avoided altogether.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 68,000 people receive injuries serious enough to warrant emergency room care every year from accidents related to lawn mowers. Fingers and toes are at great risk from the sharp and fast spinning blades under a mower. Objects ejected by the mower at high speeds can also cause injury to the operator of the mower and to bystanders. There are some simple safety tips, that if followed, should greatly reduce the risk of injury while operating a mower.

Before you begin mowing, prepare the lawn by walk over the lawn at least once and look for objects that could be violently ejected such as rocks, toys, dog bones, or any other hard objects. Be aware of any objects that protrude from the ground, such as pipes or large rocks. Running over these objects could either send the object flying out, or even shatter the blade itself. Objects shot out from under the mower can fly at high speeds and cause serious injury.

When you fuel the mower, be sure to clean up any excess fuel that spills outside the tank. Do not fill the tank while the motor is still hot because gas fumes can be ignited by the heat. Instead, wait until the motor is cool enough to touch before you attempt to fill the tank. Change into appropriate clothing before you begin mowing; loose or baggy clothes pose the risk of being snagged by the machine. Also, do not wear open toed shoes.

Before you begin mowing, make sure children are out of the area. If you are on a riding mower, watch closely when in reverse in order to make sure that no one steps behind the mower. Use caution and common sense on slopes - a riding mower may tip over if operated on too sharp of a slope. The operator can also fall onto a push mower, or the mower may roll backwards.

Before engaging in any maintenance on the mower, be sure to disconnect the spark plug wire. Many injuries are caused each year by motors that start unexpectedly when the operator is attempting to do some routine maintenance. Simply turning the blade may cause the motor to start so disconnecting the spark plug wire beforehand will eliminate the risk.

When shopping for a mower, especially a riding mower, insist on a mower that has the best safety features. Ask a sales representative about certain features such as roll over safety on riding mowers as well as safety mechanisms for operating in reverse.

Don't limit yourself to the odd job or single-time mowing. With a few tools and the right mindset, you can turn your lawn mowing business into a full time venture with great potential.

Are you ready to get started? It's simple, all you need to do is successfully plan and here are a few recommended steps.

First, remember that steady customers are key to your business success. Try to find clients who will pay you to come regularly to mow, rather than getting jobs one at a time. Charge them what you think the market will bear, within reason. Don't undercut yourself, but don't price so high that you don't get the job.

You need a mower of course. That's the only real equipment you need, but you definitely need it. It doesn't matter what type of mower as long as it works. You can succeed with anything from a manual push-mower, to a ride-on gasoline powered mower. You can make all kinds of money if you are willing to put in more time.

Tip: Once you build a nice client base through advertising, you can hire employees to do the mowing part for you. Then you can just collect profit. It may take a bit of ramping up your efforts and client base before you're going to do this, since you'll need to be at a point where you have some money coming in first. You'll also want to get a good feel for the business and how it should run before you decide to tell others to perform the work for you. Otherwise, you may end up in a situation where your clients are unhappy with the work done for them due to the confusion caused by inadequate training on your workers' part.

You can use a number of methods to achieve business success as a lawn care entrepreneur. Try a dual approach. Advertising is very useful. You want to supplement this, though, with word-of-mouth referrals from friends and family in the neighborhood.

Tip: If you take some time at the start do to research on what has made other companies successful you can learn a lot. This can give you a head start and you'll be more efficient.

Lawn Boy Mower - Easy Storage After Use

Since Lawn Boy mowers typically obtain some of the highest lawn mower ratings, it's interesting to know how the company got its start. Predating the Second World War, Lawn Boy mower Company got its modest start with a motor created by Ole Evinrude. Surprisingly, it wasn't a motor for a lawn mower. That motor was actually intended for use on boats. However, it wasn't long before the company began producing lawn mowers and became a leader in lawn care innovation.

Continuing with Lawn Boy tradition of continually advancing and improving their products, their push mowers have recently undergone a major redesign. The latest features make many a Lawn Boy mower much easier to use.

A common problem with many lawn mowers is their unusual shape, which can make them difficult to store. All residential Lawn Boy mowers include a feature that makes them easy to store, by use of a lever or knob. This trait is found in all three lines of Lawn Boy mowers.

If you're looking for a mower with an electric start, a couple of Lawn Boy Insight models should pique your interest. These mowers have Tecumseh LV 195 engines as well as steel decks. They also include a blade control system as well as the easy to stow feature. However, the Insight Gold and Insight Platinum have slight variances from the base model.

The Insight Gold mowers, while very similar to the Insight, use a Honda GCV 160 engine instead. They also come with a three year warranty, whereas the Insight mowers only come with a two year warranty.

The biggest difference among the three series lies with the Insight Platinum series. Their models may come with either Honda or Tecumseh engines and the easy to store feature is also present. However, these mowers have a higher maximum cutting height, their deck is not steel; it's made from aluminum, the transmissions are maintenance-free and they come with a five year warranty.

Which Lawn Mower Type Do You Need?

Short of installing a couple of goats to graze in the yard, there are many choices for types of lawn mowers. It's a cruel, cruel summer. Think of it as an excuse to purchase power tools!

Reel
The reel design was one of the first types of lawn mowers invented. This mower uses blades that spin on a rotating cylinder, or reel. A stationary bar props the grass upright for the mower blades to cut. It is great for cutting shorter lawns opposed to high grass due to its shearing action. The reel mower produces a clean cut and leaves fine grass clippings.

Rotary
The horizontal blade of the rotary mower moves at the same rate as the engine speed. The blade bolts to the deck, and the vacuum chamber action lifts up the grass to be cut. These types of lawn mowers are a breeze to use when you have tall grass to mow. The cut is not as close because the flat blade bends while cutting. You need to keep the blades sharpened for the rotary mower to work properly.

Robotic
To use the robotic types of lawn mowers, you set up a wire boundary around your property. This forms a barrier for the machine. Robotic mowers are designed to dock without assistance. These types of machines have sensors to detect rain so you do not have to chase after them! Robotic mowers can maintain up to five acres with ease. Have a glass of tea and salute your sweaty neighbor.

Push Reel Lawn Mowers
Believe it or not, they still make the push reel types of lawn mowers! Push reel mowers do a good job and are an excellent value. It is ideal for small lawns, and for those homeowners who do not mind a work out. Push reel mowers require little maintenance, and are safe for the environment. This saves green in your wallet and for the Earth.

Electric Lawn Mowers
Electric lawn mowers come in corded and rechargeable models. The main limitation is the length of the cord. For a small area, an electric mower is a reliable choice. It does not require oil, making it a sound environmental decision. Try not to run over the extension cord while the neighbors are watching.

Gas Powered Lawn Mowers
There are three types of lawn mowers that are gas powered: standard push mowers, front wheel self propelled, and rear wheel self-propelled.

Most people find front wheel self-propelled lawn mowers to be the best selection. These mowers are simple to control. They cost less than rear-propelled models.

Rear wheel self-propelled mowers are the most powerful lawn mowers. Folks with an abundance of hills to mow often select this type of mower. The downside is they can be difficult to handle.

Riding Mowers
Riding mowers are the hands-down favorite types of lawn mowers. They are extremely helpful if you have a lot of ground to cut. They are beneficial for the elderly, disabled, and anyone allergic to grass. It trims your land in record time, and keeps the debris away from you. Riding mowers have handy all purpose attachments including baggers, sweepers, spreaders, scoops, and even snow blades. Hurry and decide before the weeds get taller!

Choosing The Right Lawn Mower

Maybe you live in a apartment, or even better a big city, whatever your excuse may be it's about time you start to think about lawn mowers. Keeping a lawn in shape can not only benefit the look of your yard, it can also keep you healthy, and save you money. Lawn mowers are becoming more popular every day as record rates of home ownership occur. Lawn mowers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and prices. To know what type of lawn mower to get now, will benefit you in the future because it can be a daunting task to pick one from the many styles available.

The push mower will run you about $100 at your local hardware store. Push mowers are the most simple, cost effective way to cut your grass. Push mowers typically won't provide enough power to cut a large yard in a few hours, but for those with modest needs they can be the perfect start. Also push mowers don't require gas, motors, or bags. Further push mowers won't leave you with noise, smoke, and sometimes rocky rides. Push mowers are anything but obsolete, and will work well for those with a small yard.

The electric mower with a bag or without a bag usually costs around $300 depending on size and style. Electric mowers are the most popular lawn mower available. These mowers will cut a lot of grass in just a few minutes. They typically run for several years without problems, and usually hold up their value. Push mowers do require some gasoline, and may have problems with their engines. Further push mowers can be loud, and without a bag can spew grass all over the place.

Lawn tractors run about $700 to $2000 dollars. Lawn mowers don't have seats, lawn tractors have seats. This shouldn't be confused with an ATV, and is not meant for the road. But lawn tractors offer big time landscapers a chance to mow as much grass as they need without doing much more then swapping gears, and steering. Lawn tractors come in various sizes and styles, most of them come with four tires, a driver's seat, and a bag to keep clippings in. Some perform alternative duties such as tilling, weeding, and sowing.

Automatic lawn mowers will cost you between $1700 and $3000 dollars. That's right, we said automatic. Now for the ultra lazy that want to swap in your lawn tractors for an automatic mower you can. There is nothing to do but switch on, and tell the kids to watch out. These automatic mowers are just becoming popular, and will inevitably lower in price as technology advances.

Do You Wish You Had a Lawnboy?

A beautiful garden with sprawling lush green grass is a beautiful site indeed. Sadly enough they don't just grow like that, growing a lawn and keeping it nice and green takes time and work. Having the right tools for the job will make it easier for you.

Lawnboy lawnmowers are considered by many to be amongst the best mowers on the market. They are known to be operator friendly with some features that are currently unique to them including rust-free aluminum deck, easy to store capability, blade brake maneuverability and higher performance. There are models equipped with four cycle engine, single-lever height adjustment, variable speed, eight-inch wheels, and a five-year warranty.

If you enjoy tinkering with your mover engines when they need servicing then you will be pleased as there are a huge range of spare parts available online for lawnboy tools. If you prefer to have someone else service your garden tools then that's ok as there are plenty of service centres around the country with company trained mechanics. Either way you will find a mower that suits your needs whether you have a small city lawn to care for or a larger lawn which will of course need a larger more powerful machine.

In these times of financial stress and with companies going out of business left right and center it is a good idea to think about buying your gardening power tools from a company that has been in business for a long time and has a solid background in lawnmower production.

Mulching Lawn Mower - Environmentally Friendly

A mulching mower is a mower that is environmentally friendly as the grass clippings left behind by the mower act as a fertilizer for your lawn. Most other lawn mowers collect the clippings into a bag and you then have to dispose of it. Many people simply toss the grass into the bin; this is a waste in more ways that one. Mulching lawn mowers leave behind fine grass clippings that benefit your lawn and reduce waste.

An electronic mulching lawn mower removes the need for gas and therefore provides an extra environmental benefit in addition to the recycling of grass clippings.

Electric mulching mowers need to be plugged into an outlet to power them, which means you're constrained by the location of power outlets, the length of your power cord, and any obstacles that may snag the cord. If you have a small yard but don't want the forced exercise of using a push reel mower, an electric mower may be for you.

The Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog Electric Mulching Mower costs under $250 and comes with many benefits. It has a powerful 12 Amp motor, a 100 foot range and a 19 inch cutting path. You can adjust all four wheels at once with the 1 lever height adjustment. Cutting heights range from 1.25 to 3.5 inches. This is a mulching lawn mower that will do the job and give you years of use.

The best thing of course about this mower is that it's electric. There is no oil or gas needed. It doesn't smell and it's not noisy. And it's light: just 52 pounds.

One customer had a particularly positive comment about the Lawn Hog:

"I am now happily mowing my lawn with the Lawn Hog and I cannot even imagine, in my wildest dreams, ever going back to an environmentally insane, stinky, oily, noisy, shaking gas mower of any kind. By the way, the mulching function works fantastic and I now mulch much more than I bag, just remember to keep the blade clean."

Lawn Mower Go Kart - Can I Use a Transmission From a Garden Tractor on a Go Cart?

The problem with a vertical engine is routing the power from the engine to a horizontal wheels on the go kart. Typically the standard method for transferring the power on vehicles involves a gear box. For example on a lawn tractor the gearbox is designed with a pulley on the top of the gear box. Additionally, because the main purpose of a riding lawnmower is to cut grass, so the vertical engine layout works very well driving a mower deck.

The temptation comes in to play to use the gear box in the gokart and keep the unit simple that way. Unfortunately, it is not really simpler, but more complex, not to mention unreliable.

Additionally, I would strongly steer you away from using a riding lawnmower gearbox for the following reasons:

- Width Of The Rear Axel System Is Too Narrow
- Gear Boxes Are Not Designed For High Speed As In 20+ Mph.
- Gear Box Engagement Requires Belt Tensioning Devices.
- Switching Gears On The Fly Is Not Possible Without Good Engine/Gearbox Knowledge.

Width of the rear axel system is too narrow. The width of a gokart drive wheel layout should be relatively speaking wide: 36"+. Riding lawnmowers are under that width and will pose a difficulty in powering the rear wheels. Mounting the gearbox is another issue that requires special bracketry that would need to be fabricated and mounted to the framework.

Gear boxes are not designed for high speed as in 20+ mph. This is a serious consideration, especially with gear boxes that do not require lubrication and do not have roller bearings.

Gear Box Engagement requires belt tensioning devices. Typically, the gearbox is activated by tensioning the belt.

Switching gears on the fly is not possible without good engine/gearbox knowledge. The gearbox on a riding lawnmower does not have synchronizers with it, so the gearbox must be completely idle or still for the gears to be switched.

Actually, in order to get gears to mesh properly, both the mating gears must be in the same position. This can be accomplished by running the gears at the same speed, but this does take some understanding of how a gear box operates. Unskilled drivers will have extreme difficulty getting the gearbox to work. More than likely, the gear box will be destroyed in a relatively short period of time, if shifting is considered on the fly.

Conclusion...

Bottom line is that the transaxle is designed for tractor use and has some limitations. There are some better options that are lighter and more user friendly.

Next time other vertical engine drive systems.

Details Of Lawn Mower Blades

The lawnmower blades are made of tool steel or ordinary steel called mild steel or carbon steel. The edges of the blades made of tool steel remain sharp for longer time and will require lesser sharpening over the age of the blade. Tool steel blade is costly and generally cannot be sharpened at the DIY workshop. The mild steel or carbon steel is cheaper and easy to maintain. The blades have to be kept sharp. If this is not done, grass blades will be torn off instead of being cut. Apart from the obvious ugly look, the growth of grass blades is adversely affected as the moisture retention capacity of blade is reduced.

Sharpening Of Lawnmower Blades the DIY Way

You can sharpen the lawnmower blades your self quickly and easily. This operation can take a very short time. The procedure is very easy and you can do it yourself. The following procedure will apply irrespective of the type of lawnmower. Consult the operation manual of your lawnmower for removal of blades.

Be sure to disconnect all the power sources before begin with the process. In case that your lawn mower was a battery powered one, then remove the battery or batteries, depending on the model. Check twice that all the power controls are off to avoid an accidental engine start.

The second step will be finished as soon as you remove the blades totally from the mower. You might need external help to achieve it, using a couple of spanners may help a lot, however be sure that it doesn't slip. BE careful while doing this, because it's easy to cut yourself whether the spanner slips.

Once the blades are out of the mower, you need the number them in order to fit them back later.

Fix a blade in a stable holding or a vice to work easily.

The sharpen process begins here. You will need a grinder or file for it. Make sure to follow the blade's contour and sharpen it to your convenience. Sharpen all blades using the same sharpened to a perfect later cutting grass.

Time to refit the blades along. Make sure to do it along with balancing, if it exists any.

There is an option of sharpen blades without removing them from the mower, however it's uncomfortable as well as more difficult. You will also need a flexible shaft angle grinder to a perfect sharpened, which will save you time.

The last step is the blade balance checking. To carry the blades balancing you need a balancer. A clue to find whether or not the blades are correctly refitted, is checking if the mower vibrates, if so then blades are not well balanced.

Maintenance For Your Lawn Mower

So many people take the lawn mower out of the box, start using it and forget about it from there. Just like any other piece of equipment you have, you have to keep up on the maintenance of the lawn-mower. When you make sure that you are caring for it properly, you will find that it will last you a lot longer. The longer it lasts, the fewer mowers you have to purchase which means you save a lot of money.

One thing that you want to do is to make sure that you are keeping the blade sharp. This is not something you should tend to on your own unless you have experience with it. Instead, take the lawn mower to a repair shop and they can sharpen the blade for you. Depending on the quality of the lawn-mower, you might find that you need to do this at least once a year. When the blade is sharp, the grass gets a cleaner cut and remains healthy.

You also want to make sure that you are hosing off all of the cut grass that is stuck under the lawn mower and on top of it. Once you are done hosing it off, be sure that you are wiping it down to get the water off to that it does not rust. Just make sure that you are keeping away from the blade. Store the lawn-mower in a shed or under a tarp to keep the rain off of it.

How to Winterize Your Lawn Mower in 4 Steps

First, before you begin any of the steps in this guide, make sure you have on a nice sturdy pair of work gloves. Lawn mowers often have very small and sharp parts that can easily cause cuts on the hands and wrists. Safety is always the number one priority, so protect your hands from your mower before you begin protecting your mower from winter.

Step 1) Remove the gas from the mower - This can be done in a few different ways and largely depends on the type of mower you have. Some mowers have removable gas tanks that can be unfastened to easily remove the gasoline inside. Other mowers may have built-in valves or tubes for the purposes of removing fuel. Many times, however, you will have to remove the gasoline manually. The easiest way to do this would be to simply use the mower until it is out of gas. Sometimes this will not be an option, so you may have to use a siphon to remove the contents of the tank. Once the gas has been removed, try to transfer it to another machine rather than store it all winter. If the fuel is compatible with your vehicle, snow-blower or other gas operated device, it is advised to use it in this equipment rather than keep it stored for months on end. Removing the gas from your mower will prevent the gasoline from thickening, freezing/unfreezing and separating. One of the main causes of mowers not starting in summer is having been stored with full tanks of gasoline.

Step 2) Drain all oil from the mower - This should involve the gearbox AND crank case oil. Many people run their mower for years and never consider changing the oil, or even adding to the oil supply. Draining the oil from your mower before winter guarantees you will be replacing it with fresh oil every year and prolongs the lifespan of the mower. This is a good habit to get into with any vehicle that will be sitting for an extended period of time.

Step 3) Remove or disconnect the battery - Even when a mower is off, tiny amounts of power continue to be consumed by the battery. Rather than leave your battery connected all winter, disconnect it or remove it from the mower entirely. Batteries drain much faster in extreme weather, so try to store yours indoors if possible. A winter spent properly stored n the basement is much easier on a battery than a winter spent outside or in a barn.

Step 4) Clean it - Take this time to give your mower a good head to toe cleaning. Take special care to clean the blade and ejection areas. Cleaning helps prevent premature wear which can lead to cracking and product failure. Cleaning the blades will help keep rust away and keep the blades sharp for next mowing season. All exposed metal surfaces should be treated with a light grease to keep rust away in the cold winter months.

If it is not possible for you to follow all of these steps, make an effort to complete as many as possible. While the completion of all 4 of these steps should take you less than an hour and will likely add several years to the longevity of your mower, the completion of even a single step is better than nothing and will still pay dividends in extending the life of your equipment.

Repair Your Own Lawn

Areas that receive constant wear, such as under children's play equipment or at the bottom of steps on to a lawn, need to be reinforced if they are going to cope. If the lawn is used as a shortcut to another part of the garden consider incorporating stepping stones to take the impact. Where children's play equipment cannot be moved to spread the wear and tear around, reinforce the grass with heavy duty plastic mesh. Cut the grass short, and then peg the mesh down over the area so that it is held completely flat. Allow the grass to grow up through the mesh over the winter.

When you come to mow next spring, the mesh will be hidden from sight, well below mower blade height so that you can mow straight over the top. Isolated broken edges on lawns, perhaps caused by careless heel or spade, are easy to repair. Use a sharp spade or half moon edging tool to cut out a square at the edge of the lawn that encloses the damaged area. Undercut the turf and then turn it around 180 degrees so that the broken area is within the lawn and the straight part aligns with the edge of the lawn.

Top off the damaged area with sieved garden soil if necessary, then level and firm with the back of a soil rake. Reseed as described for bare patches. If the lawn is broken and uneven all along the edge of a border it is worth re cutting to improve the appearance of your garden. Mark out when you will re cut, using a board as a guide for straight edges or a length of garden hose for curved ones. Insert a sharp spade or half moon edging tool into the soil. Lever back the handle and push the soil forwards to form a gulley with one vertical side against the lawn and one curved side against the border.

Remove any unwanted grass to prevent it rooting into the border and becoming a weed problem. Repairing any broken edges will give your beds and borders a neat finish, essential when the impact of your garden design relies on straight lines. Use a half moon edging tool or a spade to cut a rectangle around the affected area. Push a spade under the rectangle, starting from the broken edge. Keep the thickness of the slice of grass as even as possible. A good quality lawn invites you into the garden, leading the eye smoothly to beds and borders. If your lawn is in very bad condition, it is worth considering starting from scratch and sowing seed or laying turf to get the effect you want.

How to Identify Lawn Weeds

A beautifully tended garden is a delight to eyes, be it a small lawn or a large rolling greens, it is surely a soothing area. However, the garden requires a lot of careful tending and efforts. In order to expert the eye the weeds can be instantly spotted when you know how to find out the good and bad plants in your garden. The appearance of your garden is blemished when there are weeds growing in it and specially the nettles and dandelion weed. Speaking broadly, there are two common type of weeds found in most lawns which are perennial and annul weeds.

The annul weeds seem to grow quite fast and they can complete their life cycle several times in a season. Moreover the seeds might also persist in the soil. These can be plants such as Great Plantain, White Clover, daisies and even dandelions and docks. However the perennial weeds often have long tap roots that can grow to unreliable lengths in the soil. They can even be the spreading root type of system which can spread allover the garden. This means that such plants can send out their shoots all over the area where they spread. Some examples of such weeds can include the pearlwort, mouse-ear chickweed, speedwell and even the sea milkwort. These types of weeds generally have small leaves and they can also have tiny hair on them.

The Burdocks and Dandelions are however exceptions. Although they fall into the category of lawn weeds they are often used as food or in medicines while they also draw away several insects which destroy the crops. The healthy turf often grows in a manner which fills up all the bare areas and also shades the garden soil. The areas which are left bare are a prime location for these weeds to grow.

Therefore these areas should be always covered with grain straw which is actually an excellent mulching agent until the turf grows and fills the areas. However without proper sunlight the weed seeding would not be able to survive. So, as the grass starts growing longer enough to be cut you can use the lawn mower which should have sharp blades. The other best way to control growth of dandelion weed or other type of weeds is by using herbicides. These herbicides are often absorbed by the leaves and it helps in destroying the weed plant and prevent from growing.

How to Stop a Slice - Be a Waiter

Would you like to be a waiter and find out how to stop a slice in your golf swing? Metaphorically speaking of course!

So you want to fix a wicked slice?

Fed up of missing the fairway?

First of all let's just look at what can generate a slice. One of the biggest causes is unwinding the shoulders too early in the downswing.

This can result in you cutting across the ball outside to in, imparting side spin on the ball. Then your ball goes off to the right with a wicked slice.

Another problem can be not rotating your hands through the ball at the impact zone. This is our main target in today's tip with - How to stop a slice.

Play like a Waiter:

So how do we do this? Well the whole concept is to imagine holding a tray in your right hand at the top of your backswing. Picture this - your right palm should be facing skywards at the top of your backswing as if you are balancing a tray on it.

Then at the end your follow through your left palm should be facing skywards, as if you are balancing a tray in your hand. Just like a waiter!

So what does this produce?

Well this will produce good forearm/hand rotation through your impact zone, adding draw spin to your golf ball. This will generate a right to left swing path to your ball flight adding distance and accuracy to your shots.

Another good tip to fix your slice is to delay the start of your shoulder turn in the downswing. Start the downswing with a delay in your shoulder turn by starting to pull your hands straight down, as if pulling a rope hanging from the sky.

We also shift our weight and hips toward our left side at this point of our downswing.

This will leave you with a killer swing! The envy of all your friends.

Well I hope you have enjoyed being a waiter in, how to stop a slice. Practice these moves in your back garden and take it to the driving range. But most of all enjoy your golf & "Happy Golfing";

Some Helpful Tips For Selecting the Right Lawn Mower

Choosing the right mower for your yard can be a hard choice to make if you don't know what to look for. There are so many different sizes and many different brands that can turn an easy job into a headache. But it doesn't have to be. You only have to know what you want. The first thing you need to notice is how large your yard is. You don't want to buy something that is too small and will take you all day. Getting the right size mower for your yard is one of the most important tips. If you have a yard that is small and is perhaps terraced with a few steps, you want to be looking for something more light weight and easy to move. However, if you are looking for something to help you manage a large piece of land, then commercial lawn mowers will come in handy.

The next thing you want to consider is how much work you actually want to do. Do you want to do most of the work with your arms by pushing the mower, and collect all the clippings and fallen leaves by hand? Or would you like your mower to do most of the work? There are great mowers that will do fantastically on doing both of these jobs at the same time, and cut the amount of time you spend on the job.

Another consideration is how you would want to store your new mower. If you don't have a lot of space then buying a large riding lawn mower is not the thing for you. If your space is limited, look for something smaller and a mower that can be easily stored. There are many mowers that have a fold-able handle and are light weight making it easy to store in small places. Likewise, if you have the convenience of a large shed or some other way of taking care of your mower, and you have a large lawn, then perhaps getting a large riding lawn mower would be more practical for your yard.

Whatever type of yard you have, you can always find something that is right for you. You just need to know what to look for. So take notice of the size of your yard, how much work you want to do and how much storage space is available to you. Taking note of these few things will help you in finding that perfect mower that you will be happy with for years to come.

What's With the Mulching Lawn Mower?

More and more people are becoming sensible nowadays. At a time where the campaigns for recycling and saving the mother earth are intensifying, many have opted to go out of their way to help protect the environment. Segregating your waste is one thing, but using a mulching lawn mower could be another way to keep you from adding up to the community waste pile.

One thing about cutting grass is that you have to keep the cut grass in the bag attached in any ordinary lawn mower so you could easily dump the contents later. Most often, when one has no intention to take his part in preserving the environment, he or she will be using plastic, which is already a big no-no nowadays, with the growing pile of non-biodegradable materials already being burdened by mother earth. But with the need for a waste free way to cut grass and beautify a lawn, came the invention of the mulching lawn mower. It doesn't require you to think of where to dump the cut grass; instead, it already pushes the cut grass into compost.

If you are a dedicated gardener, you know what this means: less hassle on your part; and more fertilizer for the soil and plants. This particular type of mower is made to leave behind thinly cut grass clippings that could be left on the lawn without that hideous bulk that you could normally see after a lawn has been mowed with an ordinary lawn mower. Another thing is that even though you left the cut grass over the lawn, the grass underneath would still grow well.

There may be many types of lawn mowers available to professional landscape artists and hobbyists alike, but if you would want to do less in cutting the lawn but do more in enriching the soil, the mulching lawn mower is the one for you. Of course it will cost you more than what you would usually spend for a simpler type, but the results could be more than you expected. Imagine mowing the lawn without getting stressed and not thinking about where to dump the waste afterwards. This will surely be a reward to anyone who loves his or her lawn but hates the waste and the tedious work.

Of course, the efficiency of this particular type of lawn mower depends on the operator. If you would want the cut grass to decompose faster, you could time the mowing frequency so only half an inch of the grass will be cut, thus resulting in finer clippings. It is also important to make sure that the mower blade is sharp before cutting the lawn. Refrain from mowing the lawn when it has just rained or you have just watered the grass, since this will result in a clumpy muddle. Remember to keep it cool. Enjoy a refreshing drink every once in a while during the mowing process. Keep in mind that a mulching lawn mower will not work fine if the operator is hurrying the entire process.

Should You Buy Generic Lawn Mower Parts?

Your lawn is your own private piece of planet earth. This is a big reason why many people have meticulously kept gardens and perfectly cut lawns. Grass needs to regularly mowed (depending on the variety and climate sometimes every week.) So it's no surprised that some people become affectionately attached to their lawn mowers. The intense work done by the machine though leads to wear and tear. Even a well built lawn mower will break down after several years of heavy usage. Fortunately, it is quite easy to find and buy replacement parts (especially for the major brands.)

Many people though are taken aback by how expensive parts from the manufacturer are. Just as official car parts are more pricey, mower companies use their replacement parts business as a cash cow. Fortunately for those looking to save money, a generic parts industry exists. Which should you choose?

It must be said that using non-official replacement parts voids the vast majority of warranties. This alone is reason enough for many people to buy "genuine". And if your lawn mower is high-end and pricey, it might make sense to just pay the extra money. You will also get peace of mind as you won't have to worry about a low-quality part ruining your machine. It is also more convenient as well, as you can usually just buy it from the dealer that sold you your machine.

Some replacement parts are very expensive (especially those having to do with the engine). A generic version will often cost a fraction of what an official one does so you can save a good amount of cash. Definitely talk to store personnel to get an opinion on the reliability.

5 Reasons to Consider a Reel Lawn Mower

Back in the old days, a people-powered push reel lawn mower was all anyone had. Gas and electric mowers weren't an option. But then these modern replacements came along, and soon the push mower became something of an antiquated notion.

Thanks to the environmental movement though there has been a renewed interest in people-powered mowers, and quite a few reel mowers are on the market today, many of great quality that can last with minimal maintenance for years and years. And if you've priced gas mowers lately, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised at how affordable these guys are (the top of the line models rarely go above $200, and you can buy new ones for less than $100).

I'm a reel mower owner myself, so I can speak from experience as I give you a few reasons to consider a reel mower:

5 Reasons You Might Want to Get a Reel Lawn Mower

1. Reel mowers are eco-friendly and sustainable.

Perhaps one of the main reasons people go for reel mowers is they've read about how horrible for the environment a gas-powered mower is. Giving off far more carbon emissions than a car (unlike with a car, you don't have to take your lawn mower in for an annual inspection), gas mowers are environmental pollutants to the extreme.

2. Reel mowers are quiet.

In addition to being un-eco-friendly, gas mowers are also noisy and annoying to your neighbors. You've doubtlessly had the experience yourself: you're outside enjoying a sunny day, maybe puttering in the garden or reading a book, and the next door neighbor fires up the lawn mower for an hour of noise making. It's hard to relax with that going on!

A push mower doesn't make any noise.

3. Maintenance is a snap.

Even if you're not a green freak, you'll appreciate how simple a reel mower is and how easy it is to maintain. There's no fuel to be purchased, no oil to be changed, no spark plugs, air filters, fuel filters, etc. etc. etc. Every couple of years, you might need to sharpen the blades, but that's about it!

4. Pushing a reel mower is good for you and your lawn.

Modern reel mowers are actually pretty easy to use, and I'm not sure pushing mine is much (if any) harder than pushing a heavier gas-powered mower, but knowing you're cutting the grass by your own efforts, makes you feel pretty good.

Also, studies show that a reel mower is better for your lawn too. The blades work differently than with a gas mower (snipping, such as with scissors, instead of tearing) and are better for your grass. On golf courses, they actually use reel mowers (albeit pulled by tractors) to cut their large lawns, because they've found them to keep the grass healthier and better looking!

5. Reel mowers don't get more expensive to use down the line.

When gas was up to $5 a gallon, you probably started to think twice about purchasing some just to pour into mowing your lawn. What does a lawn do, after all, except look good? As I write this gas prices are lower, but there's no telling what the future will bring. The folks who study peak oil are pretty convinced that we're close to an era where demand will outstrip supply. Why have all these tools in your garage that require gas to use when you can choose an eco-friendly, non-noise-polluting, human-powered alternative that will never get more expensive to use?

Brush Lawn Mowers

If your lawn is struggling to compete with the shrubs and tall grass out there you may want to consider purchasing a brush mower. They offer very strong blades with power to clear away the shrubs that are growing in your yard or the tree limbs that are scattered about. You will be surprise how well a brush mower works in assisting you with cleaning up your yard. Choose a model that allows you to chop, cut, and remove shredded trees.

Trying to cut such objects with an ordinary gas mower will be frustrating and difficult. You will end up making the blades very dull as well. It isn't practical to have to use two different tools to get the job done when you can simply use a brush mower to take care of everything. The blades can cut through limbs up to 2 inches thick. Can your current lawn mower do that? Most of them can't! A brush mower is also easy to operate as it starts with the touch of a button. No more struggling with a cord by pulling it with all your strength to get the motor turning.

Getting rid of the shrubs that have taken over your yard is the best way to help it look beautiful. Don't spend hundreds of dollars hiring someone to clear them out for you when you can easily do it on your own with a brush mower. There is a bar that breaks the shrubs and grass down and pushes it around the blades. It is a hassle free way to get rid of those unwanted items in your yard as well as cut your grass.

Tips on Buying a Lawn Mower

If you are planning to purchase a new lawn mower, there are a few things you need to consider before you actually get a device. Today, the market is lined with an assortment of lawn mowers that would leave you captivated when you visit any of the showrooms offering them on sale. But, before you go ahead and make a purchase, sit down and finalize on what is available in the market, what your requirement is, what exactly you desire and what precisely suits your needs. If possible, try to get some hold on the lawn mower jargon too, you will find it handy.

You have the option to select between a rotary and a reel mower available in gasoline as well as electric models. While the reel lawn mowers slash with revolving blades moving over a stationery blade, rotary mowers graze with a blade moving in a circular manner below a strong metal or fiberglass covering. It is, however, advisable to purchase a manual reel mower if your lawn area is 100 sq meter or less.

Nonetheless, if you desire to purchase a power mower, you may choose from the reel and rotary varieties. While the reel mowers really trim the grass shorter and makes your lawn appear tidy and chic, the rotary models usually cost less and are somewhat easier to manage as well as whet. You may also decide between buying a gas and electric-powered mowers. The gas mowers usually create a lot of noise and pollute the atmosphere. However, while deciding in favor of the electric models, check if the wire lengths suit your lawn area and if they are cordless, remember to check the battery power.

There are more options for you while purchasing a land mower - push and self-propelled types. Basically, the self-propelled types, where motors turn wheels, are useful on gradients and very large lawns. Alternatively, you may also get a lawn tractor. There is also a choice to purchase a mulching mower as it will save you from keeping bagful of grass clippings, as this model cuts the grass too finely and blows it back into the lawn to serve as organic fertilizer.

In addition, consider other aspects like whether the mower you are purchasing has enough maneuverability, if it is easy to operate whether it is too heavy for you.

Tapestries - The Original Symbols of Wealth

A tapestry is a handwoven textile. It is usually made with heavy threads of several colors. Most tapestries are hung on walls or suspended from ceilings.

The weaving of textile by hand requires much time and a great deal of skill. The weaver is limited by problems that other artists seldom face. He has no canvas to paint, no clay to model, no wood or stone to carve. Given only colored threads, he must manufacture and decorate his textile at the same time. Artists with patience, ability to plan, and skill to weave have always been rare, and tapestries traditionally are very expensive and precious.

In the days when the church and great royal houses ruled the world, tapestries were symbols of wealth. Whenever plays, official ceremonies, or public celebrations were held, tapestries lent beauty and richness to the events. Bishops and kings welcomed important visitors with red carpets flanked by tapestry displays. Religious processions followed routes marked with tapestries.

In the ancient tombs of Egypt pictures have been found that show weavers making tapestries of linen. Only a few fragments of Egyptian tapestries survive, but the pictures indicate that the art of tapestry weaving is about 5.000 years old.

The Hebrews learned to make tapestries while they were living in either Babylon or Egypt. The Bible mentions this art several times, and other ancient writings refer to tapestry weaving among the people of Syria, Phoenicia, Persia, and India. Famous throughout the ancient Mediterranean world were the textiles that decorated the cities of Tyre and Sidon. These fabrics impressed the Greeks and Romans, who dominated the Mediterranean lands between 500 B.C. and A.D. 500.

During the medieval period Islamic warriors swept across the Middle East. These people developed a unique style of art. Because the Islamic religion was opposed to the reproduction of figures, tapestries were made with forms called arabesques, which are bated on Arabic script, geometry, and abstract floral patterns.

Knights of the Crusades returning to Europe brought back an appreciation for many Eastern things. Among these newfound tastes was a delight in tapestries. Although the returning Crusaders spread a desire for tapestries throughout Europe, an actual knowledge of the craft probably came from the Moors, Islamic people living in Spain. There are legends about tapestry workshops that were operating in southern France as early as the end of the 8th century, long before the Crusades. If these workshops did exist, they must have been operated by or influenced by the Moors.

The first tapestries that we are certain were made in Europe were woven in the workshops of monasteries. As the wealth of princes and merchants grew, so did the demand for more luxury goods. By the 14th century, Paris had become the main city of French tapestry production. From then until the present the history of tapestry has been centered mainly in France and Flanders (now Belgium and northern France).

Most early tapestry designs were simple patterns of geometric shapes and the symbols of heraldry. Around 1360, birds and small animals began to be represented more often. Then in less than 10 years most of the important factories began to produce tapestries woven in sets that illustrated religious texts, stories of knighthood, and scenes from contemporary life. Although these tapestries were more naturalistic than work from the previous era they were still woven in the flat, decorative patterns typical of earlier work.

The Gothic period was a time of great cathedral building. To add color to the stone buildings, artists made beautiful stained-glass windows and hung tapestries. Pictures of Biblical scenes awed and educated churchgoers. Tapestries were also useful in sectioning off parts of large churches for special rites and ceremonies and in halting the drafts that flowed through the spacious churches.

Energy Saving Power Tools

Visit any big box home store and it appears, this summer, power saving power tools are all the rage. Replacing their gas powered counterparts, these battery or propane operated lawn maintenance tools run on alternative energy sources that both lower emissions and boast less maintenance.

Some of this year's highlights include:

Ariens Co. of Brillion, Wis., has unveiled the $3,299 "AMP Rider" electric-motor mower, run by rechargeable lead-acid batteries and never needs an oil-change

Valley City, Ohio-based MTD Products Inc.'s Troy-Bilt brand has a $169 seven-pound lithium-ion battery trimmer that can run up to 45 minutes on a single charge.

No more annoying pumping with Frontgate's battery-powered sprayer that will disperse 18 gallons of liquid per single battery charge.

People-powered push mowers are returning with a vengeance. They have similar designs, but now promise to be quieter, easier to maneuver and lightweight. Some even include attachments for grass catchers.

Earthwise makes a cordless electric mower that provides the ease of operation of an electric mower without the cord. The rechargeable 24 V battery lasts up to 45 minutes. Their cordless chainsaw still requires oil, but it runs on an 18 volt NiCad battery that is compatible with other Earthwise 18 volt tools.

The RoboMower, running anywhere from $1000 to $3000 is a true energy saving device - cutting back on both fuel and people power.

Everyone has cordless power tools, but the most efficient are the ones that share a single 18V battery. This means you can use the same battery for all your lawn tools.

One of the most extensive versions of this is offered by Black & Decker who admits to having a bigger selection of cordless trimmers than the corded version. With one 18 V battery you can charge all your Black & Decker battery-operated tools which include surface sweepers, chainsaw, lopper, hedge trimmer, grass trimmer, cultivator, pruning saw, and power scrubber. All of these products boast: " No pull cords. No trips to the gas station. No gas or oil to mix. No gas to store or spill. No fumes. No tune-ups or maintenance."

According to Joe Newland, Black & Decker's product manager for outdoor products. "There are tradeoffs, and what you lose in power, you gain in convenience and weight." He mentions that these products are particularly popular with female users. "They don't want to start with filling it. They just want to use it."

From the numbers, the public is loving these products, and as they become more widespread, prices are coming down. Even the cost of solar lighting and batteries have seen large reductions from a few years ago. Home Depot reported 2008 a record year for non-gas outdoor power equipment. In addition to the regular electric and battery operated mowers, Home Depot sells a version that runs on a 16.4 ounce propane container.

Even heavy duty, gas tool manufacturers are jumping on the "alternative energy" bandwagon. Husqvarna has just unveiled a soil cultivator for $899 that runs off one large lead-acid battery. They have also introduced an "EcoSmart" campaign featuring similar products including their manual push mower and solar-battery robot "Automower".

The government is supporting this new, cleaner technology and incentives are being reviewed that would give consumers a 25% tax credit (up to $1000) toward their purchase of eco friendly lawn, garden or forestry power tools. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency issued new rules that require manufacturers to reduce emissions from new lawn and garden equipment by 35% in the next few years. If these companies want to remain in business, they have to start examining new, alternative forms of energy.

Currently Husqvarna is testing a high-powered, battery push mower; and Arien plans to introduce a battery-powered snowblower this winter. However the general consensus in the industry is one of caution. No one is quick to unveil a product that may not have the power to do the job. "It's one of those things where we want to be careful," says Roger Phelps, Stihl's promotional communications manager. "One thing customers are demanding is for performance to still be there. It's cool to have a battery-operated mower, but if it only gets halfway across the yard, that's not very cool."

Buying a Robotic Lawn Mower? - Robot Lawn Mower Buying Tips

Thinking about buying a robotic lawn mower to free up some time and save money?

Here are some things to consider:

There are a few automatic lawn mower choices out there with prices ranging from about $1,299 to $4,200 so you'll need to consider what features your lawn require and what features you want.

What does your lawn require?

First of all, you should evaluate your lawn. Your yard does not have to be a perfect "postage stamp" lawn in order to get good results. In fact, most robotic mowers are designed to manage odd shaped lawns and all different grass types. Robot mowers can maneuver around obstacles like pools, trees, flower beds, poles, mailboxes and even playground equipment.

How large is your lawn?

Automatic lawn mowers can be used on lawns ranging from 100 square feet to 2 acres. Some models will allow multiple units to be installed on the same lawn expanding coverage far beyond 2 acres. If your lawn is on the smaller side of the spectrum, a lower priced unit may be sufficient for your needs. Before you decide on a price range, keep in mind that special features, durability and quality also influence price.

Do you have a hilly lawn or is it relatively flat?

Another big deciding factor for which robotic mower to buy is how it can handle hills. Some robot lawn mowers are designed to mow relatively flat lawns while others can be upgraded to handle steep hills. For example, the LawnBott LB3500 robotic lawn mower can mow hills up to 30 degrees with add on spiked wheels. This particular model utilizes an on board compass to keep it on course as it navigates hilly terrains.

Performance and features

Robotic mower models differ in how long they take to recharge and how long they can mow before needing a charge. Charge times can vary from 2.5 hours to upward 24 hours depending on the model you choose. With recharge times in mind, remember that robotic lawnmowers will take longer to mow your yard than a human would. Therefore, if you have a large lawn, it could take a few consecutive runs to cover the whole area. Since the robot is doing all the work, consecutive runs are effortless on your part, but you want to choose a model that can keep your lawn looking its best without falling behind during peak growing seasons.

Run times for automatic mowers can vary from 90 minutes to 7 hours before needing to recharge. Some higher end models like the LawnBott LB3550 can mow up to 15 hours per day with a recharge period in between.

Many robotic lawn mowers completely automate lawn mowing by working on a time and day schedule. The lawnmower will automatically leave its charging station; mow the lawn, and then dock when it's done. Lower end robotic mowers will require you to bring it indoors to charge.

Other important features and points to consider:

" Higher end robot mowers can detect how quickly your lawn is growing and will adjust its schedule to according to when the lawn needs to be mowed. This feature can be useful during droughts or fast growing seasons.

" Most fully automated robotic lawn mowers utilize a rain sensor to automatically pause mowing sessions.

" Some robotic lawn mowers are big and heavy while others are small and light weight. It's important to consider weight and size of the mower in case you need to ship it for repairs or servicing. Depending on which model you choose, weight can range from 21 pounds to 85 pounds. For example the LawnBott LB3210 weighs only 21 pounds while the Robomower RL1000 weighs around 85 pounds.

Maintenance and replacement parts

Maintenance is very simple for robotic mowers. There is no need to empty bags or clean up grass clippings because they are mulchers. Most manufactures recommend replacing the blade(s) once a year. Robotic lawn mowers are electric lawn mowers, which translate into no gas, oil or spark plugs to replace.

Another thing to keep in mind is replacement part cost. Some robotic lawn mowers like claim to have a life expectancy of about 8 to 10 years before major repairs are needed. Higher end robot mowers generally have better quality, longer lasting parts, which also means higher upfront and replacement part cost. On the flip side, lower cost robotic lawnmowers use cheaper parts, which may result in more frequent repair needs that could end up costing more to upkeep than higher end models. With that said, robotic lawn mower maintenance cost will almost always fall well below the cost to upkeep and maintain traditional lawn mowers or paying a lawn service.

Most robotic lawn mowers come with a 2-year warranty with varying warranties on the battery. Some warranties include pickup and return shipping cost depending on which model you choose.

Getting your yard ready for a robotic lawn mower

Now that you have decided to purchase a robotic lawn mower, it's time to prepare the yard.

" Although most robotic lawn mower's bump sensors can detect objects over 4 inches high, you would want to remove small toys, strings, hose pipes, lightweight objects and other objects lying around on the lawn just as you would with any lawn mower

" Fill in big holes. Some robotic lawn mowers have problems with "lawn potholes."

" If your robotic lawn mower requires perimeter wire, plan your install. A good dealer will offer to illustrate a customized installation plan free of charge. Installation for most yards can be very simple while others may require special wiring tricks. Expect to set aside the most part of a day to peg down the perimeter wire.

Robotic Lawn Mower Overview

Robot lawn mowers are not the gadgets you might think they are. The robot lawn mowers on the market today are serious mowing machines. Not only do they do a great job mowing, they keep your lawn mowed.

Do you care about the environment? If you care in the slightest, you are already using a mulching lawn mower vs. bagging your grass clippings. However, since you don't have much time to mow, the length of your grass overwhelms your mower. Long clippings and large clumps remain on your grass. They turn brown and kill the grass underneath. Is it possible to be environmental yet still have a great looking lawn?

The answer is yes. Electric robotic lawn mowers are the answer. Since they run on batteries, there is no gas, oil or pollution. All-electric, robot lawn mowers reduce global warming. Are you aware traditional lawn mowers and riding lawn mowers pollute 10 times more than cars?

Robotic lawn mowers maintain a consistent grass height by mowing more often. They obey the 1/3 rule of grass cutting. That is, only one third of the height of your grass should be cut at each mowing. This is the healthiest way to mow your lawn. Experts also agree that the random mowing pattern used by robotic lawn mowers is the best pattern for keeping grass healthy and avoiding permanent lawn mower tracks.

Many electric robot lawn mowers are self-recharging. That is, they recharge themselves in a charging station that stays outside. This enables the robot to mow as often as it needs to in order to keep the lawn mowed. The batteries last anywhere from 3-7 hours, depending on the model chosen. The recharge time is 2-3 hours. This is plenty of time for the robotic lawn mower to mow the lawn in a random fashion and get all of the missed spots on its own.

Electric robot lawn mowers can mow by themselves with no intervention from you, or you may prefer to be present while the robot mows the lawn. Robot lawn mowers can be set-up to mow one section at a time. In this configuration, you set the robot lawn mower down, click a few buttons and off he goes to mow the designated section. Then you can move him to the next section for more mowing and so on. Choosing this method enables one to purchase a less expensive robot for a larger yard, saving money.

Now that you are intrigued, you will want to understand more about how a robot lawn mower works. As mentioned above, some models have a charging station that sits outside. The robot has a control panel in which you can set the days and times the robot can come out to mow. There is a wire that goes all the way around the edges of the property and around any flower beds or troublesome tree roots. The wire can be staked down (recommended) or buried up to four inches. The robot comes out when scheduled and goes back to the charging station whenever it needs to recharge or if it is scheduled to go back. Many robot lawn mowers include a rain sensor that will send the robot back to the charging station during a rain storm.

There are three main brands of robotic lawn mowers that have been shipping for many years. These are Lawnbott, Robomow and Husqvarna Automower. Lawnbott is manufactured in Italy by Zucchetti. Lawnbott is available under the name Ambrogio all over Europe. Lawnbott's US importer is Kyodo America or KA for short. The Automower is distributed by Authorized Husqvarna dealers and is manufactured in Sweden. Robomow, also known as Robomower, is made in Israel by Friendly Robotics. Robomower's US importer is Systems Trading Corporation, or STC.

Lawnbott and Robomower are the main US consumer robot lawn mower brands. Lawnbott is available through a group of authorized dealers (most are online) and a handful of smaller hardware stores. Robomower is available through many online retailers. The Automower from Husqvarna is mainly promoted through dealers rather than on the internet and is not available as widely as Lawnbott and Robomower.

Belrobotics is the first commercial robotic lawn mower brand to become available in the US. Belrobotics also sells a robot that picks up golf balls. It comes with a lift station that places balls in a bin. Soon, a new robot lawn mower will become available specifically for putting greens. It is designed to mow in perfectly straight lines to golf course manager's greens specifications. This new robot is from Precision Path. It is not clear what Precision Path's marketing plan is since this have not been publicly disclosed.

In light of the green movement, the recent gas price escalation, people's desire to save time and business's desire to optimize labor costs, robotic lawn mowers are here to stay.
